Pakistan and India swap prisoners today
LAHORE: As a sequel to confidence building measures, Pakistan and India will exchange prisoners on Tuesday (today).
Pakistan will hand over 20 Indian prisoners to the Indian Border Security Force and India will deliver 20 Pakistani prisoners to Pakistan rangers. The exchange will take place at the Wagah border which will be attended by top Pakistan Rangers and Border Security Force officials.
Sources informed Online that some prisoners of war (POW) were also among the prisoners to be exchanged. The civilian prisoners include a majority of people who had strayed across the border.
Pakistan is also expected to return a large number of Indian POWs next month. Sources said that Pakistan had directed its high commissioner to India to collect statistics about Pakistani prisoners held in various jails in India. Sources said about 800 Pakistani prisoners were in Indian jails even after having served their terms. The Indian government implicates them in new cases instead of setting them free, sources added. Pakistani prisoners are held in Amritsar and Tahar jails while most Indian prisoners are held in Kot Lakhpat Jail. online
