Punjab University BA and BSc results 2004: Girls clinch five of top six positions

LAHORE: The Punjab University’s (PU) Bachelor of Arts / Bachelor of Science (BA/BSc) annual examination 2004 results were dominated by girls and had only a 32.33 percent pass ratio. This is lower than the 35 percent pass ratio in 2003.

The results were announced on Monday in PU’s New Campus Faisal Auditorium. The examinations cater to more than 100,000 candidates every year.

Pass percentage: Out of a total of 128,832 candidates who submitted admission forms, 122,325 candidates appeared and 41,650 passed. In the BA examinations, 70,542 girls appeared and 25,606 passed while 40,368 boys appeared and only 9,198 passed. In the BSc examinations 6,187 girls appeared and 3,414 while 9,987 boys appeared and only 2,526 passed. In the nursing examinations 730 girls appeared and 209 passed. Only seven boys took the nursing exams and only two passed.

In the special BA categories, 178 candidates appeared and 112 passed. Of these, 15 passed (out of 102) in BA Fazil, 60 (out of 137) in BA Wafaq-ul-Madaras and 21 (out of 49) in BA Additional Subject.

In the special BSc categories, all 23 passed in BSc Additional Subject, 450 (out of 483) in BSc English and 11 (out of 25) in BSc Additional Subjects.

Boys-girls comparison: A total of 40,838 regular candidates appeared and 18,791 passed the examinations (46.01 percent pass ratio). Amongst the regular candidates, 31,647 (25,599 girls and 6,048 boys) appeared for the BA examinations and 14,780 (12,995 girls and 1,785 boys) passed. The pass ratio for girls was 50.76 percent and for boys 29.5 percent. In the BSc examinations 9,191 (4,293 girls and 4,898 boys) regular candidates appeared in the examinations and 4,011 (2,743 boys and 1,268 girls) passed. The pass ratio for girls was 63.89 percent and for boys 25.89 percent.

English literature and language: The overall pass ratio in English language was 34 per cent, while in English literature it was 83.58 per cent. Out of 110,463 English language (compulsory) candidates, 37,815 passed. In English language, 10,391 out of 40,135 boys passed (25.89 percent pass ratio), while 27,424 out of 70,328 girls passed (38.99 percent pass ratio).

In English literature, 157 out of 244 boys passed (64.34 percent pass ratio), while 1,014 out of 1,157 girls passed (87.64 percent pass ratio).

Islamic and Pakistan Studies: In Islamic Studies and Pakistan Studies (compulsory, total marks 100), candidates have to pass each subject individually. All candidates appearing in Physical Education, Paper-A are given three grace marks. The grace marks were added to the concerned paper after approval by the vice chancellor.

Fee defaulters: Fee defaulters must clear their dues within seven days of the result declaration. PU will not be responsible for any consequences if the fee is not deposited. As many as 442 candidates wrote incorrect roll numbers on their answer sheets and have been told to pay a fine.

UMC: Centre superintendents, examiners and university monitoring teams recorded Unfair Means Case (UMC) complaints against 252 candidates. All except 11 cases were decided before the declaration of the results.

Results cards: The result cards were dispatched through Urgent Mail Service on August 27, 2004. Result cards of all the colleges were delivered before the result declaration. Candidates who find discrepancies in the result card can submit an application to the university within 60 days of the result declaration.

Supplementary exams: The supplementary examination for 2004 will be held in the first week of October. Admission forms for supplementary examinations can be submitted by September 10. The next BA, BSc annual examinations will be held in April, 2005. The university will accept admission forms till November 15.
