Seminaries call off anti-govt protest

KARACHI: Wafaqul Madaris Ittehad, an umbrella organisation of seminaries, has decided to end its protest against the government for operation against madrassas.

The protest has been delayed on assurances by President Pervez Musharraf in a recent meeting with an Ittehad delegation to resolve their problems, Ittehad spokesman Muhammad Hanif Jullandhri told reporters at the Darul Uloom Naeemia on Monday.

He said the establishment and the government wanted to create a rift in madrassas and that was why stern action was being taken against them. He appealed to the president not to act against religious parties which were peace loving and ready to make sacrifices for Islam. Hanif Jullandhri asked the government to avoid the reconstitution of religious institutions like the Council of Islamic Ideology on political basis but try to restore their credibility with the Ittehad’s help. online
