[ - ] Does STMPG care about diversity? We love the school, but was shocked to see that there was virtually no obvious diverse students. Do they only look for white kids? If we are a diverse family, do we stand a chance? TIA 2 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I had a similar car dilemma. The only thing you can do is buy the best car you can manage. Figure out how much you can put down, if you can manage payments, and how much, and go from there. A subscription to consumer reports online ($20/year) gives you great access to car reviews. You got money from insurance, right? [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Need your advice. I was recently speaking to a group of mothers at school when one suggested to another that they take their kids to a local restaurant. As we walked closer to the location I realized that they had not asked us to join them. I felt hurt by the snub but my child quickly started to cry the deepest cry I have ever heard. We both walked home with tears in our eyes. (FYI. We are nice people, smart, fun and not clingy!) My child asked why we weren't invited and through the tears said that we could have paid for them (so sad). I explained that the mothers did not behave properly and that our lesson from this experience is to always be inclusive. Generally, the mothers at the school seem to lack basic manners such as introducing a new parent to a group, and often barge into a conversation leaving someone like me out in the cold or simply ignoring the "lower" mothers so that they can "manage up." It's actually quite funny to watch. Pls don't think I am a wallflower, quite the contrary, I am a "normal" person with a healthy self-esteem. Any advice on how to navigate through the queen bee mothers of the school so that I can remain sane? Thanks. 13 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I'm so sorry you had to experience this. How hurtful and cruel. Do NOT listen to any bitches on here who give you the 'they just weren't that into you' line. For some reason, there are some really sick and cruel people on here who love to say that when someone posts something like this. You did the right thing by responding the way you did. You showed your child the higher road, and this will pay off in spades down the line. Just smile at those women next time you see them. They did you a favor: they showed you what they're made of. You clearly deserve better friends, even casual/school friendships. Seek those out. Look for some other mom's that seem friendly and make a suggestion that you all go somewhere. Be sure to include everyone. Give your child a secret wink and smile when he/she sees you acting with courtesy and respect to your fellow human beings. Forget this episode and have a wonderful three day weekend. The world needs more people like you. Signed, Angel Mom [ Reply | More ]

How did you realize you weren't invited. Often, and especially if you were walking with them as part of the conversation, they might have just assumed you were, and not explicitly said it. I guess maybe I am one of those awful mothers, but I think that if you have plans with another person, you aren't obligated to include every person you encounter en route. Not every plan can include every person. No need to rub it in ("we're going to have lunch but you aren't included!") but you are allowed to have a prior date. Sometimes I want to spend time with a friend without a third party present. Nothing personal! Happy to have lunch with you another day. My DC sometimes complains when he sees friends leaving for a playdate without him, but I remind him that he has plenty of social plans. [ Reply | More ]

dh will be getting more life insurance, HHI from wages barely above $100k but we have non-wage earning from our investments. we found that wage-earning is not the most efficient thing for the 2nd earner. in case the worst happens, say dh dies, i'd be able to manage thanks to investing skills i have by now. it helps a lot to keep fixed costs as low as possible, with housing for ex. we have a rent stab instead of buying, saving us a ton that we do actually put aside. going against the grain here, and I'm going to say it's probably fine, but I wouldn't do it. In general I tried to avoid lots of unnecessary chemical exposure especially in the first trimester and you will be breathing in lots of bad stuff at the nail salon. I don't think you're crazy to think this way. I also wouldn't bring a newborn with me to the nail salon and let her sleep in the stroller while I got my nails done, bc those toxic fumes aren't good her to breathe. Of course, if you get a manicure, all will probably fine, I think it's more of a cumulative problem if you're constantly exposing yourself to stuff like this. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Ever refuse to give up your seat? I was reading a post on another board (lady refused to "move" at a movie theater) - caused quite a debate. She was getting over a cold. In a prime row, she sat one seat away from a stranger who was coughing/sneezing. Her BF sat next to her (on her right). To his right was another "buffer" seat. A pair of moviegoers arrive late (several minutes into the movie). At that time, the first five rows remained empty. They went to that poster's row, went to her, and asked her to move (1 seat closer to the sick person). She refused, and it got a bit nasty. WWYD? 17 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I was eating lunch at a favorite restaurant where the only seating is 4-5 teeny tables for 2. People often share the tables. Now, I make a point to get to places earlier so I can grab a better seat. One day, I was in the middle of eating my lunch when these two women asked me to move to the next table over (a few inches away - but involved picking up my food and moving my things), and share it with a stranger, just so they could sit together. I moved (to not cause a scene in that tiny place!) but resented it all day. [ Reply | More ]

I would have just taken a seat in the first 5 rows, I would never ask anyone to move unless there were really not 2 seats together in the whole theater. That being said, if someone asked me to move I probably would. I would not have sat in the same row as a coughing sick man to begin with. But I agree with above posters that if I was worried about moving closer to a particular person, I would have just moved the other way and allowed the late person to sit next to that person. I show up early so that I can sit where I want to sit. If you show up too late, too bad. I have a minor disability that makes it difficult for me to use stairs on bad days, so my DH and I use the reserved handicap-accessible seats on those days when we go to the cinema. We've given up our seats and had our tickets refunded when obviously able-bodied idiots in all the other reserved seats refuse to give them up for people in wheelchairs to sit with their families. I'm talking about people who've come in running and jumping over railings but decided they wanted to sit with their legs stretched out instead, so moved to the reserved seats, and weren't going to move for the disabled. That's the only kind of situation where I move. [ Reply | More ]

younger than my son, i'd say he was 2 1/2 and my dc who shared his toys with him was 3 at the time. the issue was the mother. i could tell beating each other up at home was common because she actually suggested to beating me up when i politely asked her to explain his dc that hitting is not ok. do i want that mother and kid as classmates of my dc? i do not. she was dressed like a gangster too. Ok so a two and a half year old boy beat your theree year old boy? Does that make you want to move to another public school district so the two boys are not in the same classroom? [ Reply | More ]

read how this mother used the opportunity to teach her dc about not hitting? by getting ready to hit herself. if you raised kids, you should realize this is not ok. why expose my dc to these type of people? we are not pro-violence, sounds like you are. [ Reply | More ]

I think parents' examples are definitely a factor in how kids turn out. If they always see their family members hitting...then they think it's ok to hit. Hello? [ Reply | More ]

ANd you don't know how it works. It's a combination of environment and genetics. Depending on the person, environment or genetics will dominate. Both are significant factors. Double up violent home life and genetic predisposition, and you've got a future problem. How much is hard to say, but for some, it's a very bad thing. That much aggression at this age is NOT normal or healthy. [ Reply | More ]

that exactly what i felt! like i was getting a preview into "raising the next generation of prisoners". wouldn't even surprised me if the dad isn't in the picture cause he's "doing time". was told by a lawyer who does community work that they even take pride on "doing time". these don't make healthy peers, maybe i have too high standards. sorry. I was with you earlier but you're seriously reaching here. The dad may be in the picture or he may not be. If he's not in the picture it could just be because he's irresponible not because he's doing time. [ Reply | More ]

I dont get it. Did the mother threaten to beat you up her self or did she threaten to have her toddler beat you up? If the later then this story is actually kind of funny [ Reply | More ]

herself. i have moms and nannies telling me: "call 911"!!! i left the playground instead of escalating the issue. that playground at 116th and morningside park has 2 very entire different populations, very educated parents and then few gangster types blended with teenagers instead of little kids. i "solved" it by being careful to only show up when the more healthy/educated group is the majority. the more gangster types don't show up in the mornings, for ex. a couple of moms who knew about the event suggested this and it's the best way to go. My blood is boiling that this happens. Those kids and their parents dont even have the sense to appreciated they are living off of others and this behaviour is attrocious and I would go bat shit crazy if it happened to my dc! I'm a minority but I'm so tired of paying at the grocery store and seeing people pay with their food stamps card while being beautifully dressed! One woman who paid in front of me with a food stamps card 2 wks ago stopped at the lotto machine (and of course had tons of cash for that!) Another this week had her man in his new SUV pick her up in front of the store. These women who work the system make me sick! I'm going to explode one day soon. These kids beating up other toddlers and ALL the other horrible MH delinquents beating up the children of people whose socio-economics improve their area make me despise them rather than feel sorry for them. This is why there is hatred between different minority groups. [ Reply | More ]

I agree with you but the answer is to live in a neighborhood where these violent bullies dont live. Certain neighborhoods are safe. You can not change the system so dont stress out. Move to a neighborhood that is free of them and put them out of your mind [ Reply | More ]

^^^However I doubt if many of these women have guns. Knives/razors are more likely but the weapons really don't matter. I'm a minority who grew up in a bad neighborhood and trust me many of these women can do major damage with just their hands (fingernails, feet, etc). If you do not know how to defend yourself it's really safer to just walk away quickly. There's not point in getting severely injured just to prove a point. [ Reply | More ]

I agree but really, arent knives much deadlier than just hands and feet? I am more likely to confront a problem mom if i think she has no knife. Anyway didnt you read about the violent public school boy at stabbed a mom in the bed bath and beyond? Knives are serious [ Reply | More ]
