ROTTEN SOULS (CRC)
AND SO WE AT THE GATES Self Released
Written by Ronald on Saturday 30 July, 2011. Last updated on Saturday 30 July, 2011

We have recently received a killer promo from certain Costa Rican band called Rotten Souls and their debut “And so we at the Gates” self released on early 2011. A full length album that allows to discovers a very talented band doing their business…which is nothing else than pure fast & furious melodic black metal with a personal feeling and identity that really caused an impression on me.

First off we may start by saying this album has a flawless sound production, however and contrary to most of the bands within this genre, Rotten Souls does not sound with that over compressed/plastic artificial sound that is the common practice nowadays, contrary to that, what we get on this album is a pretty  well balanced mix where every instrument sound separately and with a natural texture.

From a musical stand point, the stuff on this album relies on a mix of traditional black metal, you know pretty fast and right in your face passages, but something to remark here are some melodic passages where acoustic guitars and male clear voices come together along with some keyboards here and there. I mention this because these parts help building the bands image…which is kind of a blackened sadness…

Finally we go to the overall presentation…and here these fellows surprise with a professional digi pack artwork filled with creepy band pictures, lyrics and all the usual stuff a metal maniac may look at every release.

So…even when I am not a big fan of bands into this style I must recognize that Rotten Souls have something different in their sound that makes them a band I really enjoy and recommend, nothing to envy to productions from more traditional scenes, these guys have a really promising future if they can export themselves outside their country. Feel free to contact the band directly as for they still have copies of this album to sell plus some other merchandise like t shirts.
