Waste Heat Recovery Projects

A majority of energy production from both conventional and renewable resources is lost to the atmosphere due to onsite and offsite (cable and transformer) losses, up to around 66% loss in electricity value. Waste heat recovery units are an energy recovery heat exchanger that recovers heat from hot streams, such as diesel generators, cooling towers, or air conditioners. Waste heat recovery units add to the efficiency of building energy needs and thus decrease the costs of fuel and energy consumption, as well as dramatically reducing thermal and air pollution, since most of the energy is recycled.

Best Western Inn

Solar collectors and a matched heat exchanger system provide enough heat to cover 95% of hot water in summer and 70% hot water in winter. In addition to the solar technology, the system also recovers wasted heat from the hotel's air conditioner to help heat the water in summer. This is believed to be one of the largest solar thermal installations in Canada. Expected amortization period is six years.

Listel Hotel, Vancouver

Listel Hotel is the first hotel in Vancouver to install a cutting-edge renewable energy system. The hotel is reducing its carbon footprint and annual energy expenses through the use of solar panels and a highly efficient heat recovery system with heat pump. The hotel expects to reduce its carbon gas emissions by 170 tons annually. The estimated pay-back time for the system investment is less than six years. Comfort Inn & Suites, Red Deer, AB

A heat pump is connected to 60 solar collectors and a highly efficient heat recovery system. The system will also heat and cool the building and it's 88 guest suites and it will convert waste energy from the hotel's other systems. The automated system shunts heat from areas requiring cooling to areas demanding warmth, and stores excess heat in a storage tank to be used elsewhere. The system is expected to save over $150,000 a year and pay for itself in 5-6 years.
