The Mode Condo

Location:

Kelowna, BC

System Info:

  • 87 unit apartment building developed by The Mission Group
  • Solar System: 30 solar collectors
  • Total collectors gross area: 75.9 square meters
  • Solar water storage capacity: 1,800 liters

How the system works:

The Mode Condo, an environmentally friendly apartment complex designed by The Mission Group, uses 30 solar collectors with an 1,800 liter storage capacity. The panels are expected to provide 35 to 40 percent of the annual hot water demand for the building and up to 90 percent during the summer season, significantly reducing energy costs.

“It helps meet our goals, being one of the seven solar cities,” said Kelowna's mayor, who sits on the provincial 100,000 Solar Roofs committee and has helped improve progress in this area.

The development has won an award from the city for the developer's effort to employ environmentally friendly systems and practices and was initially designed to have a geothermal system, tapped off the Landmark Buildings next door. While technically feasible, provincial regulations under the BC Utilities Act made it very difficult to draw the power source across property lines. The development's timeline and budget eventually required those plans to be scrapped.
