Research Questions

Primary Question

¨      How will the digital revolution of the 21st century affect the narrative film industry with respect to production and distribution?

 

Secondary Questions

¨      What is the technological difference between the new digital technology and more traditional film stock for motion pictures?

¨      What is the cost difference between the digital technology and film?

¨      How do digital films affect the type of movies being made?

¨      Who will now make films with digital technology being more widespread?

¨      What are the aesthetic differences between film and high-definition motion pictures?

¨      How does the change to digital effect post production?

¨      What industrial changes will occur with the change to digital?

¨      How will tertiary education in film transform with the change in technology?

¨      What changes in cinema distribution will occur in Australia?

¨      What is the cost and accessibility of digital distribution?

¨      What are new methods of distribution with the advent of more digital cinema?

¨      What new forms of exhibition will emerge?

¨      How will the change to digital affect piracy?

¨      What are the differences and challenges between film and digital anti-piracy?

 

Research Design

¨      Secondary resources were researched to find the key technological and statistical facts and methods.

¨      We approached and interviewed

o       RMIT staff that recently approved the purchase of high definition cameras.

o       Filmmakers – established and new.

o       Producers.

o       Cinematographers.

o       Film distribution companies.

o       Cinemas.

 

Outcomes

¨      The target audience mainly comprises of students and film enthusiasts. All the information collected will be collated on a viable and accessible website which will contain multimedia.

 

Time-line

The project began on March 16th 2006 and was completed in June 2006.
