Story

Princess Peach is kidnapped by Bowser and Mario sets off to save her. During the battle, a giant sword crashes into Koopa's Keep. Mario, Bowser and Peach are scattered across the land, and when Mario tries to return, he finds out that an evil invading army of metal creatures are trying to take over the Mushroom Kingdom.

Information

Mario sets off to find the princess and along the way he is joined by Mallow, a cloud who thinks he's a frog; and Geno, a representative of the Star Road in possession of a doll's body. Together they vow to rebuild the Star Road and stop these new monsters at all costs. Later on in the game, Bowser (who wants his keep back at any cost) will join you, and even Princess Peach can be found later in the game.

You fight enemies like in most RPGs - by choosing to attack, special attack, defend, or use an item from a menu. As you defeat enemies you get experience points that let you level up, as well as Coins and other items. The world is huge and contains both old and new characters and enemies. There are also many minigames to be found, providing a diversion from the expanding storyline.

Cameo Appearances

Link: Hero of Sleep

Like all towns in the game, Rose Town has an Inn where you can stay and regain your HP and MP. However, this Inn has two beds. Sleep at the Inn as soon as you arrive in Rose Town for the first time. When you wake up, the second bed will be occupied by Link from the Legend of Zelda series. If you try to talk to him the "discovery" noise from the original Legend of Zelda can be heard.

Samus References

Reach the very top of Booster's Tower and you will end up in the room where you have to hide behind curtains to avoid Booster and his Snifits. In the room is a toybox full of dolls. Aside from the dolls that Booster plays with, there is also a Samus Aran doll (from the Metroid series).

But there's more! When you reach Land's End for the first time, avoid completing it, and instead head all the way back to the Mushroom Kingdom and sleep in the Mushroom Kingdom Castle's guest room. When you wake up, head to Princess Toadstool's room and check the bed. Samus Aran is sleeping in the bed, resting before her battle against Mother Brain.

Hinopio's Collection

Hinopio's Inn can be found deep within Barrel Volcano. Head to the rightmost corner of the Inn's lobby area, and you will find three scale models of futuristic spaceships. They're not just any ships though. The Arwing from Star Fox is one of them, and the others are the Blue Falcon and Fire Stingray racers from F-Zero.

The Final Fantasy

Monstro Town is home to a locked door that cannot be opened without a special item known as the Shiny Stone. Behind it is the hardest battle in the game with a terrible demon known as Culex, and his four elemental Crystals. Culex is based on similar boss battles in the Final Fantasy series of RPGs, also developed by Square. The three songs that play during your encounter with Culex are also taken from the Final Fantasy games.

Contrary to popular opinion, Culex is NOT from any actual Final Fantasy game. He is designed to look like a number of boss characters, but does not appear in any game other than this one.

Easter Eggs

Menu Hints

This code only works in the Japanese version of the game.

Go onto the main menu and press Down, Up, Right, Left, SELECT, START, SELECT, START and B. Kinopio (Toad) will run on, show you your status and give you game hints.

Auto Reset

Hold down L, R and SELECT, then press START. The game will automatically reset, and you will lose any progress from when you last saved.

2D Mario

As you climb Booster Tower, there is a curtained off area at the top of a staircase. Walk Mario behind the curtain and when he comes out he will be a classic, NES-style sprite. When you leave the room he will turn back to normal.

Sleeping Link

After collecting the second Star, head back to the inn at Rose Town. Sleep for the night, and when you wake up, Link from the Legend of Zelda series will be sleeping in the bed next to you.

Sleeping Samus

After collecting the fifth Star, head all the way back to Peach's Castle in the Mushroom Kingdom. In the Guest Room, Samus from the Metroid series will be sleeping in the bed.
