War of the Year
A significant portion of action games takes inspiration from real-world events, especially historical military conflicts. Since virtually every moment in World War II has now been re-envisioned as some sort of a fun-filled, fast-paced action game, many game developers have pack up and settled on other, later conflicts for inspiration. As such, allow us to cynically present our finalists for War of the Year--because, if these wars never took place, then many of this year's action games might never have existed.

The Vietnam War
It's kind of like the Pacific Theater of World War II, only with better music. This year, you couldn't fire an M16 without accidentally shooting a game based on the Vietnam war.

There's no better way to show your patriotism than to purchase and play video games based on the war in the Middle East, right? At any rate, there are lots of these to choose from.
