Mobile Phone Recycling

In the past couple of years mobile phone recycling has picked up tremendously. Whether you’re in the UK or the USA, many companies will pay for or give you credit for your old cell phone. A lot of people go through 2 or 3 mobile phones a year and there is no point to add them to our ever increasing garbage dumps.

You probably won’t see it at any mobile phone shop, but most phones contain about 10 toxic and hazardous substances. These include cadmium, palladium, rhodium, beryllium, lead, copper, arsenic, zinc, lithium, manganese and more. Just these reasons a lone is a good enough one to not dump them to our landfills.

If you plan on getting a new phone, save your old phone and bring it with you when you go to buy your new one. Most cell phone companies will dispose of it properly. Some companies have deals where you can get a credit for your old phone.

If you can’t be bothered to go to a cell phone company because of their increasingly scary sales tactics, you can find a local recycling plant close to you that should be able to take it and dispose of it properly. Some may even give you a small amount of money but don’t get too excited because it won’t be anything to shake a stick at.

Some companies will allow you to mail in your unused or lightly used mobile phones for a cash payment. Usually you will know how much you could receive before you actually send it. If they find any problems, they will most likely discount that from your payment.

However, with privacy and security being a big issue, you should format the phone to the factory settings and remove any SIM chips or cards. You wouldn’t want any pictures or videos to be found by someone else right? If you plan on getting a new phone, make sure that you back up all the data first before doing so or you will lose it forever.

The few extra steps that it takes to get your phone recycled could end up giving you cash in your pocket and doing a bit to help save the environment for another day.
