The Geelong community can join in the fun on Sunday 14 December, to celebrate the opening of the first two sections of Geelong's new Ring Road. Project overview
When completed, the Geelong Ring Road will be a freeway-standard road extending 23 kilometres along Geelong's western outskirts from the Princes Freeway at Corio to Princes Highway at Waurn Ponds.

Drivers will be able to avoid up to 29 sets of traffic lights, with a travel time of less than 15 minutes compared with the current 25 - 60 minute trip through Geelong.

The $380 million project is jointly funded with the Australian Government providing $186 millon through the AusLink program and the Victorian Government contributing $194 million.

Both the Australian and Victorian governments have committed future funding to extend the Ring Road over the Princes Highway and along Anglesea Road, connecting to the Princes Highway in Waurn Ponds.

Features
The Geelong Ring Road is being staged in sections, and is expected to be progressively opened, as follows:

Section 1 - Princes Freeway Corio to the Midland Highway Bell Post Hill
Works commenced on this 10.5 km section in February 2006 and are scheduled for completion in December 2008.  Abigroup is VicRoads contractor for works on this section.

Section 2 - Midland Highway Bell Post Hill to Hamilton Highway Fyansford
Works commenced on this 4.5 km section in September 2006 and are scheduled for completion in December 2008.
Cut & Fill Pty Ltd is VicRoads contractor for the road works and earthworks. Fulton Hogan is constructing the 200 metre long twin bridges spanning the Moorabool River.

Section 3 - Hamilton Highway Fyansford to Princes Highway Waurn Ponds
Works on this 7.5 km section commenced in September 2007 and are scheduled for completion in late 2009.
Abigroup is VicRoads contractor for works on this section.

Section 4 - Connection to Anglesea Road Waurn Ponds
Planning is underway for Section 4 which involves an extension of the Ring Road to Anglesea Road via an overpass of the Princes Highway. The 2.5 kilometre section takes the Ring Road as far as Hams Road in Waurn Ponds and is expected to be completed in 2010.

Planning is also underway for future links to the Surf Coast Highway and the Princes Highway West.

Involving the community

As part of VicRoads community consultation strategy for the Geelong Ring Road, a Community Reference Group (CRG) was established in 2004 for each of the three sections of the Ring Road. The CRG provided key stakeholders with a means of effective participation during the planning stages of the Geelong Ring Road.

Following completion of planning activities, the CRGs have evolved into a single Community Liaison Group (CLG) to support continued consultation during the construction phase. Membership of the CLG is made up from community representatives, stakeholder organisations, regional municipalities, relevant State Government agencies, VicRoads personnel and representatives from contractors delivering the project.

Members of the community are invited to visit the Geelong Ring Road Project Office in Corio to view an innovative three dimensional model. The model details some of the major features of the Ring Road and incorporates a landscape plan, locations of the shared pathway and provides a visual perspective of distances to local amenities.

VicRoads staff provide information to members of the community

VicRoads provides information to the community in a range of other ways, including community information forums and presentations, public displays, advertising, direct mail and project bulletins.

If you would like to arrange a presentation, please contact the project office.
