Typical CCMAU staff member profile

Advisors or senior advisors would typically join one of the following three teams:

  • Communications, services & infrastructure.
  • Energy, land & environment.
  • Science & innovation.

CCMAU usually looks for candidates with the following attributes:

  • Strong analytical skills, including an understanding of financial statements, and the ability to analyse data and draw conclusions on company operational and strategic performance.
  • Commercial acumen.
  • Credibility when talking to Ministers, officials and senior executives.
  • A strong interest in the areas in which the companies operate (for example, science and technology, energy, infrastructure, and communications).
  • Proven experience in a relevant commercial and/or public sector environment with at least three to four years of relevant business experience, such as strategic planning, policy management and relationship management.
  • A high level of written and oral communication skills.
  • An understanding of government processes.
  • A relevant tertiary qualification.

Advisors and senior advisors typically monitor a small portfolio of companies. A key requirement of the role is maintaining the confidence of Ministers and key stakeholders. Key relationships include Ministers, Ministers’ offices, company boards and senior management, and other government agencies.

Common tasks include the following:

  • Evaluation of company business plans and regular reports to provide advice to shareholding Ministers on financial and non-financial performance.
  • Evaluation of business cases and major investment proposals.
  • Liaison with company management regarding information requirements and reporting procedures.
  • Preparation of ministerial briefings, correspondence, responses to parliamentary questions and requests under the Official Information Act 1982.
  • Attendance at ministerial meetings and select committee hearings.
  • Project work, including inter-departmental initiatives.
  • Regular company visits and attendance at industry events to maintain awareness of company and sectoral issues.
  • Opportunities for secondment to Ministers' Parliamentary offices.
