Information
The Wii was unveiled on the 17th May 2005 at Nintendo's E3 press conference under the working title of Revolution. Nintendo's fifth home console abandoned the failing model of better-graphics same-games that other systems were following and instead improved upon Gamecube hardware while also providing many unique features.
The Wii controller is shaped like a remote control, and is able to detect movement in all directions through a sensor placed on top of the television set. The controller is wireless, and has built-in rumble and a speaker for playing sound effects. The controller has a port on the base through which any number of extensions can be added. One of these, the "nunchuku" controller, has an analogue stick and additional buttons, plus a tilt-sensor inside for additional moves. A retro gaming controller and a light gun controller have also been shown.
Wii is online at all times, providing news, weather reports, web access and downloadable content. One online featurer, the Virtual Console, allows you to purchase software from Nintendo's NES, SNES and N64 back catalogue, as well as the Sega Mega Drive, TurboGrafX 16 and MSX systems. The console is backwards compatible with the Gamecube, providing access to a massive back catalogue.
