"I wanted to go to a law school that would challenge my existing ideas about law and society. I loved my Criminal Law class with Professor Sara Sun Beale. The intimate environment of the small section was very conducive to the exchange of ideas and discussion. Professor Beale really challenged me to think about things from a new perspective and challenged us to immerse ourselves in the details of what it takes to be good lawyers. What I wanted was diversity and to be challenged, and I found both in abundance at Duke Law School."

The educational approach at Duke Law encourages the development of new ideas and the exploration of differing points of view. You'll see this manifested not only in the leadership roles our faculty assume in emerging areas of legal scholarship, but also in the dedication and the creative approaches they bring to their teaching.

Certain foundational skills are critical for the study and practice of law and at Duke Law, teaching those skills is our first priority. Our required first-year curriculum provides a firm grounding in the core subjects, as well as training in legal analysis and reasoning. From this foundation, Duke Law has built an innovative and intellectually rigorous upperclass curriculum that focuses not simply on mastery of traditional rules and principles, but also on the skills necessary to prepare for the changes that lie ahead. Our strengths are in fields that will be in especially great demand over the coming decades, including corporate and business law, international and comparative law, and the law relating to technological innovations in communications, information, science and medicine. Our clinical course offerings have expanded exponentially this year, with the addition of three new clinics in business law, international law and children's education law, respectively. Students have the flexibility to structure a course of study tailored to their interests and career goals.
