The inaugural Foundation Members' Meeting of the Global CCS Institute was held in Canberra on 15 to 17 April 2009.

The Institute was officially launched by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd on the first day of the meeting, which was also attended by Minister for Resources and Energy, Martin Ferguson, and Minister for Climate Change and Water, Penny Wong.

More than 160 representatives from various government, private industry, and research bodies attended the meeting. Approximately 85 of the bodies represented signed on as Foundation Members and Collaborating Participants of the Institute. It is expected that more members will join by 1 July 2009 when the Institute becomes a separate legal entity.

Sessions at the meeting covered the intended governance, structure, and international architecture of the Institute, as well as group and panel discussions around securing projects, creating partnerships and alliances, knowledge sharing, and harnessing community support. Interim CEO Nick Otter closed the meeting with a discussion on 'The Way Forward' for the Institute.

The Australian Government announced the Institute in September 2008, with annual funding of up to $100 million to accelerate the global deployment of commercial scale CCS projects.

The Institute will support commercial scale CCS projects, with the aim of identifying, researching and facilitating demonstration CCS projects both internationally and domestically.
