About the working group
The APEC Energy Working Group (EWG) is a voluntary, regional-based forum operating under the APEC umbrella.
The working group was launched in 1990 with a broad objective to maximise the energy sector's contribution to the social and economic well being of the APEC region, including the promotion of regional energy security.
The EWG works to promote regional energy security through its Energy Security Initiative. The initiative is aimed at addressing a range of short and long term regional energy challenges including energy trade and investment, energy efficiency, clean energy technologies and energy diversity.
The EWG has a well established structure that includes representatives from APEC Economies and research organisations. This includes four Expert Groups, and the Asia Pacific Energy Research Centre (APERC). APERC is a Tokyo-based, independent operating energy research centre for the APEC region. APERC’s research activities, which are guided by EWG priorities and overseen by the Expert Group on Energy Data and Analysis (EGEDA), seek to foster an understanding among APEC Economies of global, regional and domestic energy demand and supply trends, energy infrastructure development, energy regulatory reform and related policy issues.
Australia chairs the EWG Energy Trade and Investment Task Force (ETITF) which seeks to address regional energy trade and investment barriers. The ETITF meets in association with meetings of the EWG.
How is RET involved?
The Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism (RET) is the lead agency responsible for Australia’s participation in the APEC EWG and ensuring that Australia's energy interests are reflected in global and regional energy policy development.
