The commercial and services sector incorporates business entities operating in the retail, financial and media and telecommunication sectors, hospital and health sectors, as well as those corporations that own and operate large commercial properties.

In 2008-09, EEO participants in the commercial and services sector used 44.4 PJ of energy, representing approximately 0.8 percent of Australia’s total energy use.

Energy Efficiency in the Commercial and Services Sector

The opportunities identified by corporations within the commercial and services sector have been primarily focused on improvements to lighting and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.

EEO participants in the commercial and services sector have reported identifying 3.61 PJ of energy savings, and adopting 2.15 PJ of energy savings. ‘Adopted’ energy savings includes opportunities reported under the categories of implemented, implementation commenced or to be implemented.

The Significant Opportunities Register contains a cross-section of the significant opportunities described by commercial and services corporations in their EEO Public Reports. The spreadsheet format can be filtered to find specific types of opportunities of interest. The register aims to facilitate access to different ideas that may assist corporations to identify opportunities to increase energy efficiency.

Energy Efficiency Best Practice Case Studies

The Energy Efficiency Best Practice program, which ran from 1998 to 2003, worked with companies and research agencies to improve energy efficiency. The result of that collaboration was a series of case studies and best practice guides, which include information on include retail sites and hotels.

Energy Efficiency Opportunities in the Hotel Industry Sector

This report investigates the energy performance of hotels, carried out in 2000 as a partnership between the Energy Efficiency Best Practice Program of the then Department of Industry Tourism and Resources (ITR) and the Australian Hotels Association (AHA). It is based on a survey of approximately 50 hotels with the majority of the subject group Australia-based.  The report includes an analysis of data and proposes benchmark indicators of best practice performance within the surveyed hotels.  It raises the profile of hotel energy benchmarking as a valuable tool for hotel engineers and identifies major variables affecting energy efficiency in hotels.

ResourceSmart Commercial Buildings Program

The Resource Smart Commercial Buildings Program aims to deliver greenhouse gas and water savings through specific support initiatives, while also building the capacity of the broader market to improve existing building performance in the longer term.
