About the measures
The Australian Government has a comprehensive range of measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition Australia to a Clean Energy Future.
The government's plan for a clean energy future includes a carbon price mechanism to commence on 1 July 2012 and measures to support renewable and low emission technologies, energy efficiency, and abatement in the land sector.
As part of the plan, the Australian Government has committed to reduce Australia's greenhouse gas emissions by 80 per cent on 2000 levels by 2050.
The energy sector is the primary source of Australia's emissions and Australia's current level of energy demand is expected to double by 2050. The energy sector has a key role to play in reducing Australia's emissions.
How is RET involved?
The Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism (RET) has implemented a series of measures to support clean energy and energy efficiency.
The department is also developing new initiatives as part of the Clean Energy Future package.

The department is working closely with the Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency and other key agencies to implement the government's plan for a Clean Energy Future.
Timeline
The Australian Government announced the measures on 10 July 2011.
Key elements of the Clean Energy Future plan, including the carbon price mechanism, will commence on 1 July 2012.
