53 Maturing
In a context of self-restraint we utilise influence.

Trigrams : self-restraint (bottom), influence (top) : with/from self-restraint comes influence. [wind over mountain]

The mud from which 53 has emerged is best described by analogy to the under-stated qualities of hexagram 63, completion, closure.

Commentary :

In hexagram 53 is the the transition of a loose 'yielding' relationship to one of firmness and strength. The penetrating wind restrained. (directed). In the image, by emphasizing one's mental powers it is hoped that this influences the common people and encourages them to better themselves. This does not occur overnight, maturing takes time. Contextually, we combine correct order and completion with modesty and evenness giving gradual development; maturing.

(In the traditional text, the spirit mentioned below is symbolized by a wild swan.)

Goal of 53 - hexagram 61 (or 'how do I 61? - 53')

Five-Phase Relationships : The trigram of Mountain reflects Filtration (through discernment). The trigram of Wind reflects Production (through re-production, cultivation). The relationship is expressed in the process of maturing.

53 is the goal of 37 (or 'how do I 53? - 37 How do I mature? Through maintaining a rigid structure that acts to reduce tension, that stands up to the mindless flow - IOW have good, strong, foundations')

Some PAIRINGS of hexagram 53 with other hexagrams:

This pair reflects an overall focus on maturing, be it standing one's ground against the 'mindless' flow of reality (hexagram 39) or in the form of a developing relationship that has taken many years (hexagram 53). Both acts require self-restraint as a core behaviour and so the focus on the 'aged' and the associated difficulties faced. Hexagram 39 has an edge of integrating, both in dealing with a forest of barriers that need to be bypassed, whereas hexagram 53 favours more a focus on differentiating, like the maturing of a fine wine.
This pairing reflects issues of maturity, it being done 'correctly' (53) or being forced and so done too soon (54).

At the LOCAL level we are dealing with an octet of hexagrams with the MOUNTAIN trigram as base. In this sequence hexagram 53, the focus upon slowly maturing, opposes hexagram 62, where the focus is on exaggerations, portraying. More so, the exaggerated sense of overplaying traditions to maintain the coherence of the collective is reflected in a more balanced format through the focus on, as well as recognising the consequences of, maturing.

This pairing, besides reflecting the oppositions of the binary sequence here reflects the commonality in the pair, where the roots of both are in issues of maturity and as such variations on the process. Just as 54 can reflect being immature so it can also reflect the focus on, the demand for, immediate 'growing up' as compared to the delayed gratification reflected in 53.

DEVELOPMENT:

53 : development - through gradual, maturing, conserve energy; 53 gradual development, maturing, comes from a context described by hexagram 63 - closure, correct sequence

54 : development -through sudden, immaturing, expend energy; 54 sudden development, immaturing, comes from a context described by hexagram 64 - non-closure, incorrect sequence, remain open

In this pair we have the recognition of change as expressing maturing (53) compared to the refusal to change (12).
A combination of obstruction to the 'mindless flow' of reality, with a focus on completion, on 'correct order', is reflected in the concept of maturing.
