39 Bypassing, Against-the-Flow
In a context of self-restraint we utilise control.

Trigrams : self-restraint (bottom), control (top) : with/from self-restraint comes control. [water over mountain]

The mud from which 39 has emerged is best described by analogy to the under-stated qualities of hexagram 37, rigid structure as tension release.

A situation covering standing up (being an obstruction) against the mindless flow, as well as bypassing obstacles and so moving with the flow - both serve to release tension

Commentary :

Cooperative format : In hexagram 39 a blocking emphasis is present where (a) one is blocked in one's path, but this blockage is from within. It is therefore best to try and find an alternative route - bypass to overcome rather than conflict. This may require changing one's self temporarily. Contextually, we combine rigid structure and selectivity into a situation of dealing with obstructions. (b) There is also the intent of blocking, standing up against, the mindless flow of things and so establishing some structure/control. The overall sense covers issues of tension release.

Oppositional format : water against mountain.

Template/Persona format : Contractive Bounding in a context of Contractive Bonding.

Five-Phase Relationship : The trigram of Mountain reflects Filtration (through discernment). The trigram of Water reflects consumption. This reflects both blocking the flow (and so being discerning about the flow) as well as being blocked (and so getting around the blockages. Consumption, since it has an element of containment can act to obstruct - arterial blockage, too high cholesterol! etc)

Goal of 39 - hexagram 60 (or 'how do I 60? - 39' How do I create standards? By blocking the mindless flow of things)

39 is the goal of 63 (or 'how do I 39? - 63' How do I block things? Through asserting begin/end points)

Some PAIRINGS of hexagram 39 and other hexagrams:

LOOSEN (TENSION RELEASE):

39 : loosen - through bypassing obstacles, or going against (fight) the flow; 39 bypassing comes from a context described by hexagram 37 - rigid structure (family)

40 : loosen - through relaxing structure; 40 relaxed structure (releasing) comes from a context described by hexagram 38 - mirroring, obstructions
This pair reflects an overall focus on maturing, be it standing one's ground against the 'mindless' flow of reality (hexagram 39) or in the form of a developing relationship that has taken many years (hexagram 53). Both acts require self-restraint as a core behaviour and so the focus on the 'aged' and the associated difficulties faced. Hexagram 39 has an edge of integrating, both in dealing with a forest of barriers that need to be bypassed, whereas hexagram 53 favours more a focus on differentiating, like the maturing of a fine wine.
In this pairing we see that just as hexagram 39 can stand its ground against the flow, so hexagram 38 stands its ground through pretence, to appear to go with the flow by letting others see themselves in one, where one acts like a mirror and so oppositions can be dealt-with. The reflective nature of the trigram of lake in hexagram 38 is complemented by the restraining nature of the trigram of mountain in hexagram 39.

At the LOCAL level we are dealing with an octet of hexagrams with the trigram of MOUNTAIN as base. The association is between 56 and 39 where the exaggerated sense of remaining loyal is reflected in a more balanced format in that of being an obstacle to the 'mindless' flow of things; we do not advertise our loyalty, we just hold our 'ground'.

In going against the flow of things we often have to go against traditions (the obstructions of 39) as compared to holding firm to them (26 - and in so doing 'go against the flow of 'mindless' nature).
A combination of maturing (53) together with rigid structuring (37) is reflected in the obstructions to 'mindless flow' reflected in hexagram 39.
