I can't say that I know a whole lot about the Ys series, but it's really old apparently. Ys Origin first came out for PC in Japan back in 2006. Six years later it's being released in English on Steam. It has also been enhanced a little bit to add things like widescreen support.

Ys Origin might actually be a good place to jump into the series. It's a prequel, so it comes first chronologically in the series. It doesn't have the same protagonist as the rest of the games either, so you don't have to worry about knowing what's going on with the story. 

JRPGs can be hard to find on the PC, and this looks like a delightful little game. You can get it for just $19.99.

I really enjoyed Ys Seven on the PSP, and it was a consistent nominee for Portable RPG of it's year. Hopefully this one lives up to it or is better, though it is technically older.

By the way, I really recommend checking out the trailer for Ys: The Oath of Felghana (Also on Steam), especially if you still desire to see more of Ys before dropping money.

Ys Origin has never been released on the PSP or in English.

This is a prequel starring three different playable characters that takes place hundreds of years before Ys I and II.

Many consider it a favorite in the series and you definitely NEED to check it out.

I really liked Y's 7, but after Napishtim, and even 1&2, as well as Felghana were fully voiced, it seemed like a cheap shot that Seven was not.
