TGS: Sony announces a redesigned, slimmer PS3 photo

At Sony's pre-Tokyo Game Show press conference today, Sony announced a new PS3 system that is even more slim than the current PS3 Slim. The PS3 Slim Slim?

Sony says that they've reviewed the entire structure and came up with a new design that is half the size and weight of the original PS3, and 25 percent lighter and thinner than the current system. The system will be offered in black and white colors.

The pricing is the same as the currently available system, but the storage size increases from 160GB and 320GB configurations to 250GB ($269) and 500GB ($299). North American availability begins on September 25 for the smaller system, with the larger following on October 30.

Europe gets a special 12GB flash memory configuration on October 12, priced at 229 Euro.

Legacy Comments (will be imported soon)

Why not just give us a basic model with a small HDD and a lower price and let us buy our own HDD? I like where Nintendo is going with the Wii U on this one.
looks fucking ugly :O
Backwards compatible?
what i really want is a slimmer, lighter Reggie Fils-Aime.

no wait, i don't want that at all.
@ LOLFAQ, probably because the PS3 game installs take up so much space as it is, that they didnt want customers getting frustrated when they constantly had to manage their game installs and downloads with such limited space. It becomes an even bigger problem when you've downloaded patches for those games, and if you have a game like Bad Company 2 that patch alone is over 1 gig excluding the game install. @ Thevalrog agreed.
@L0LFAQ

Seriously? The biggest PS3 is $50 cheaper than the Wii U before the hard drive.
I fear that Sony may become the Sega of this generation. We don't need your goddammn 32x when we know the Nintendo 64... I mean Wii U is coming out a few months later.
@Dario Silva,
then why there's 12GB model?

also why the prices are higher for newer models, WTF?
not to mention the fact that they've priced 12GB model at 230euros which is more than 250GB model in US.
i should have waited for Uncharted 3 game of the year edition instead of a 2nd copy!!!!!!

it's a shame it won't include all of the new DLC that was released.

i would pay $60+ if it had everything that was in store from today.

still the new PS3 slim ehh i don't like it for some reason.

i love the original slim more, maybe because of those bar things??
@solidturtleman they're just saving money by making it smaller, they did the exact same thing with the PS2.

NEVAR FORGET.

And hey, it's 40 TIMES faster than 16-Bit!
...goddamn it.

I wish they had also upgraded the wifi to N speeds.
Are there any shots of it next to the slim and or original just to gauge its size?

Also no wireless n?
am i blind or there's no wifi? so basically is this another typical ps3 "price cut" which means Sony's taking out even more hardware from the console to cut their manufacturing costs and boost profits?
thank god i've got mine ps3 last year.
By now there really should be a $200 model. This is a bummer.
Is it easier to code for then the current PS3? No? Oh....
Looks like they ripped a thin, top-layer of plastic off, leaving an exposed unfinished layer underneath.
I would make sweet, sticky love to anybody who can supply me with the white one now. I mean right now.
So this is real. I really don't get this. The PS3 is on the way out and they already made a slim version, why make another? Is there really anyone left who wants a PS3 but hasn't bought one by now?

Also it does look pretty ugly. Those corrugations on the top look tacky.
Well this is incredibly unnecessary. It'll be profitable no doubt, especially with the Xbox players what with the console turning into such an ad ridden shit hole.
Wow this is..... how i do say unique?
This is getting ridiculous
@Scrustle
Yeah. I've been buying Wii and PS2 and DS games this entire generation.

And waiting for the thinnest PS3, 'cause even the thin was too big. And expensive.
I'd rather be a generation behind and get the best for less.
They should bundle this with the Vita and call it the Pii U.
This is sad. Also, it looks like it fell out of an 80's sci-fi B-movie.
The PS3 is clearly the lesser console this generation. I' d buy an Xbox360 instead if I wanted a console.
It will barely have space to put a disc on by 2017.
Looks allright, backwards comp would had sold me though.
Oh ok. My PS3 did die after five years, and as long as I'm getting another...
I'm guessing the official U.S pricing will be cheaper, $269 seems like a lot for a 3rd iteration of a kind of old system. Then again, I dont remember how much the slim ps2 went for when it released.
What the heck is with that top surface? The split-level thing looks atrocious. Worst industrial design of a console since the original 3DS (yes, I have one, love it, but god is it ugly as sin).
No power button, eh? Good luck turning this baby off.

Also disappointed that there isn't a seven-piece 3D Move pack-in.
Hmm....while I've been tempted to actually get a PS3, it's a little late in the ballgame to really jump on it's bandwagon. Spending another $300 on this current generation of gaming seems kinda foolish with the next gen literally right around the corner.
I don't understand what the bitching is about. It's not as pretty as the original PS3 for sure, but this model is a huge jump in looks over the current slim. I hate that thing.
No PS2 hardware brought back!?????? PS2 hardware must still be making them enough profit for them to keep it out of the chassis redesigns now... Considering the inherently lower manufacturing cost, you'd think they'd want to start ramping up PS3 sales, but I guess selling PS2s for pure profit and selling PS2 games over PSN are making them too much money to give fuck all about the customers desires.

And STILL no rear USB!? After recently getting a Move, I've been pissed that the Eye camera has to be plugged in the front, with an ugly wire looped around the side of the console at all times for easy access to plug it in.

Oh well; despite the motion controls being twice as responsive, the Eye sucks for detecting aim compared to the Wii. That's what they get for using an old, single view webcam instead of the Wii's two points of IR.

Fucking hell. The two things I wanted in a new model are not there.
@plufim
Totally agree. It looks like the PS3 got buttfucked by one of those wierd consoles from the 70s and that's the result.

But are you sure you didn't mean the original DS? The first 3DS looked pretty much like a DSi with a second camera. But the old silver DS looked hideous as fuck.
I haven't seen any pictures to prove it, but it looks like this is a top loader.
I assumed at first, like djnealb, that the top design has a disc tray that slides open. It looks like it could have a thin disc tray though.
looks like it has a disc tray this time? figures i just got a slim like 2 weeks ago. my release day 60GB BC ps3 finally died. after playing 12 hours + of sleeping dogs in one sitting. didnt turn on the next morning, got the beeps, YLOD.

trying to decide if i want to bother fixing it just enough to get my saves and then sell it, or if i should just take it to the gun range and tare it apart with my 7.62 or the 22LR.

@ Sofik88 "am i blind or there's no wifi?"
no, youre stupid, you could never see the wifi in the first place.
Also, it would be wise if they created this new hardware revision with the implicit intention of supporting Vita remote play... It should be supported on existing PS3s since it's nothing more than taking the HDMI video/audio feed and pushing it to the WiFi... so there's no excuse for this one not being capable.

PS2 hardware BC reinstated. Rear USB. Full, local connectivity with Vita and Remote Play. That'd be a great update.
I imagine that Sony is replacing the original PS3 Slim with this thing, so all I can say is I'm glad I got my PS3 slim before they replace it with this weird looking thing.

500GB for $300 is not a horrible price, however.
Hahaha @ fetusmilk
Same price? lolSony
Looks pretty slick. Too bad I haven't turned on my PS3 since Uncharted 3. D:
I'm just happy they haven't announced a PS4 yet...but I haven't read all the TGS stuff yet either.

fingers crossed.
heard about this quite awhile ago... there really are no secrets in gaming anymore!
Nice to see the bigger HDD at the same prices though - now that I have PSPlus it's amazing how quickly I'm eating up my HDD!
Ha-ha! Sony what a fuckup. Only Sony could constantly fail harder then a sub-brick. Oh do not get me wrong; I enjoy the simple design of the "true slim" PlayStation3 Home Entertainment Console. I do. What Sony failed to do was reach a marketable point. Now this will still sell to those collecting, or with OCD habits, or looking for a new model to replace an older one. What the problem here is though is that they failed (horribly) to combat Nintendo, or even Microsoft who thusfar has no holiday sale, or bundle, or redesigned hardware for this quarter. Nintendo can justify it's self now. People will easily spend the extra twenty, or fifty dollars and get a "NEW" WiiU system. Why? It's "NEW" and the PlayStation3 in a slimer shell is not "NEW". It's still a PlayStation3. When push comes to shove Nintendo just won that round. Sony also failed to capatalise on a market that Microsoft has owned alongside Nintendo now for a while. The under two hundred market. Let me amend the under one hundred and fifty market. Both Nintendo and Microsoft both have a console under a hundred and fifty dollars. That is fantastic! Amazing! Good for business. Sony? Sony is still trying to figure out why it's losing money. It's because, Sony fails harder then a sub-brick. Not a lick of Business sense in Sony. They killed the PlayStation Portable, and signed away profits for the PlayStation Vita (life) just the same. They suck at just about every aspect outside of television sets, or speakers anymore. Sony is literally the Sega of the gaming industry. They never know how to make good choices. Sega cannot seem to learn, and well Sony? Sony gets laughed at by Sega and they are still floundering too. Talk about morons made for one another.

This is horrible. Make a new console -- overprice the hell out of it! Woohoo! Anyone defending Sony can fuck themselves. They deserve the hate, the ridicule, and to be laughed at. Hell they bring it upon themselves to be stoned. Seriously only Sony can take the best consoles and make them shit. Remove a new feature every year, hinder the fanbase, and make everything a struggle. That is Sony in a nutshell.

Sony's ideology. We'll win the skirmish and that is all we need. Microsoft and Nintendo? They win wars, and one is a toy company! Holy shit. Sony you suck.
SONY starts reminding me of Apple...
