Secret of Mana arrange album gets track list, samples photo

The release of Secret of Mana Genesis is right around the corner, and while we linked to a teaser site last month that didn't tell us a whole lot about what it would sound like, the folks over at OSV have kept an eye out on the official webpage and have spotted a new update featuring the album artwork and four streaming samples from the album. Samples include the opening "Fear of the Heavens" and the ominous "Prophecy."

Interestingly, rather than going for interpretative arrangements, the music presented sounds more like an HD remix soundtrack of sorts, taking the original source and upgrading the sample library. It still has a distinctly "gamey" and Secret of Mana-esque sound, which is a plus if you liked the original game's soundtrack. It can still be pre-ordered from CD Japan and will ship on August 8.

Are you liking what you're hearing with this album? Does it make you wish a Secret of Mana HD remix really was in the works, or would you have preferred more interpretative arrangements?

Legacy Comments (will be imported soon)

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!
Love it!
Although I like what I'm hearing, I wish they would have given a bit more of a liberal interpretation of the music. Unfortunately, it sounds simply like someone took the midi straight from the source and put in some better sounding instruments, without even touching up or rounding out the melodies. It sounds good, but I can do the exact same thing using any number of modern music programs on my PC with little to no effort. Considering that, it's hard for me to shell out $30 + shipping for the album from Japan.

Here's an example of a good remix using live instruments which still retains the flavor of the original:

Well, Secret of Mana+ was about as liberal as it gets. Still the original soundfonts in SoM were so high quality already this sounds a bit pointless. Also Rose of Solemn was the best DoD Secret of Mana track everrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

I'd rather have a true Secret of Mana sequel, one without world building gimmicks and with an actual story.
"Does it make you wish a Secret of Mana HD remix really was in the works?"

No. Pixel sprites >>> Hand-drawn HD cartoony sprites.

The only games that need HD re-releases are polygonal games made for lower resolution displays where the textures don't stand the test of time as well.
Reading the official website, it seems Hiroki Kikuta, the original Seiken Densetsu 2 musician, is doing it. He blogs how he actually still had those 20 year old original source MIDI files (as best I could read from the Google translation)..

This makes me insanely happy.. It's just as cool as having Yasunori Mitsuda do the music for the DS version of Chrono Trigger.

Analyzing the music, I can tell some of the samples are the same, and some are upgraded (maybe he had the original source samples that were used before converted to SNES spc samples?)

This means that this soundtrack is what the OSV sounded like on his synthesizer before it was "downgraded" to work on the SNES!

I can't wait to hear what this song sounds like:

Genesis?
Just bring back the original trilogy already.
I think for liberal interpretations, people can stick to OC Remix.

There's no need for Hiroki Kikuta to deviate from what made the original tracks so amazing. I love that these only feature enhanced instrumentation.
Kikuta made his own sound samples that were based directly on SFC sounds when composing SoM, so it would be as close to a 1:1 transition as possible when putting it on the system. If he's using that stuff as a base, that would explain why this doesn't sound any different.
Yikes. Really?

Not what I was expecting, I'll say that. Sounds like a not-quite-impressive MIDI album, to me. In some cases, I might even say the original sounds were better.
my favorite game of all-time. love the soundtrack and use it all the time to listen to while I write my fantasy novels. a true inspiration. shame it only has 16 tracks on the new soundtrack.
I find that extra portions of arranged tracks sometimes don't match the original melody well, so I don't mind if they simply replace the instruments with better ones - as long as it sounds better.

Like most improved instrument arranged tracks, the samples for this soundtrack sound a little lacking in bass (at least, compared to what I remember).

However, I have always held the soundtracks from Seiken Densetsu 2 and 3 in high regard. I'm looking forward to hearing more arranged tracks from 2 and would really like arranged tracks for Seiken Densetsu 3.
they've added more samples to the page. http://www.square-enix.co.jp/music/sem/page/seiken2_somg/
I just got and listened to the first eight tracks of Secret of Mana Genesis.

It's ...

... beautiful.

I'm fuckin' serious. This is the greatest thing I've heard in a while.
