Jimpressions: PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale

Jimpressions: PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale photo

There's no escaping the fact: PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is one of the most blatant and shameless rip-offs seen this generation. It might as well embrace the sarcasm and actually call itself Sony Smash Bros., because Sony's refusal to admit what it's doing makes me cringe every time the game comes up.

Oh, but here's the thing ... it's still pretty fun.

I got to play with Radec (of course!), Sweet Tooth, and Big Daddy, and I had a blast with all of them. Big Daddy may be a tad overpowered, as every person who picked him seemed to win, but the chaotic combat of Super Smash Bros. has nonetheless been preserved quite well, and it's surprisingly effective with Sony's characters, despite them not being quite so iconic as Nintendo's. Watching Nathan Drake and Parappa the Rapper duke it out might not be too nostalgic, but it's still pretty damn cool.

All the characters felt different to play with, and fought in a way that remained remarkably true to them. Radec feels like the brutal soldier he was trained to be, firing a range of Helghan weaponry and wielding his signature combat knife. Sweet Tooth is heavy but has fast and chaotic attacks with an arsenal of classic Twisted Metal weapons. Meanwhile, the Big Daddy lumbers forth and utilizes a host of recognizable Plasmids, as well as his vicious drill.

Yes, this game is shamelessly copying Nintendo, but it seems to be doing it well so far. I think I can live with that.

Legacy Comments (will be imported soon)

Man, I don't care what Sony's done except for the fact that they made a playable Smash Bros clone. If I had a PS3 I'd be all over this shit day one
I like how Big Daddy is a Sony character for some reason.
Day one Vita purchase. Because I hear people DO, in fact, want to play this on Vita.
beema: they have said many times that third party characters are a very important part of Playstation. If it were not for the third parties Playstation would not exist. And its not like Snake is a Nintendo character and he was awesome in brawl.
I'm certainly interested in it as I love Smash Bros and I liked similar games like Battle Stadium DON, but I doubt it will have the quality of Nintendo's game. Also, it is just me, or do the graphics look worse than Brawl? Maybe not technically, but it's definitely uglier in my eyes.
I really need to get my hands on this. The gameplay videos look a little on the boring side but many people say it's fun to play.

And yeah, the game is called PlayStation All-Stars, not Sony All-Stars. I thought it was a given that there would be third-party characters in the game especially since the inspirational "Michael" video had characters from many outside developers/publishers.
I've always liked Brawl but hated the characters, so this is perfect.
To be honest, I don't care if something's derivative, so long as it's fun or interesting (for instance, I enjoyed Dante's Inferno, a shameless God of War clone - this isn't even the first Smash Bros. clone I'll have played, either, having owned Viewtiful Joe Red Hot Rumble). I'm looking forward to this. Hoping for Cole from inFAMOUS, Sir Daniel from Medievil, and I'll be surprised if they don't hammer out a deal to get Cloud in there somewhere, since FFVII was a huge boon to the PSone. Also expecting to see the protagonists of Journey in there, as it's selling like gangbusters right now.
I've noticed that too, but cool your jets, Beema.

It's not as though Solid Snake or Sonic are Nintendo characters but that didn't stop them from appearing in Smash Bros Brawl. It's the miracle of licensing!

And a natural outgrowth of what might be percieved as some amount of unease that Sony's current regime seems to have with it's quirky past. If Parappa is good enough to include in this, where the hell has he been? I'm not sure why Sony wants to mine nostalgia in this context, but we can't even get a PSN sequel? But I'm rambling again..
@beema

Like how Sonic and Snake were Nintendo characters?
@tristy

Time to up that dosage of clozapine then eh?

/jokes
if I had a vita i would get this.
to the butthurt: one could make a point that nintendo ripped off joust for smash bros, but we are all grown ups who know videogames are always doing something that's already been done, in a different way. right?
Honestly, the only thing that will influence my purchase of this game is the number of people I know who buy it. I honestly don't care much at all for the majority of the characters shown so far, so I just don't feel it will have the kind of novelty value Smash Bros has had for so long.

I don't want this to be another Twisted Metal for me, where the fact that I don't like playing with complete strangers and no one I play with bought it caused me to wish I had spent my money elsewhere.
ANY tiem a game is successful, there is always a following of similar games. Nothing wrong with that, as long as they can bring a few things to the table. Besides, not everyone wants to play as Pikachu or Link.

I wouldn't mind a AAA Characters Battle Royale, such as having Soap MacTavish, Noble 6, Ezio Auditore Da Firenze,Nathan Drake, Cole McGrath,Alan Wake,Dovahkiin, Mannimarco the King of Worms,and Ryu Hayabusa. That would be cool.
I wonder if we'll see all the characters from the "Michael" add, even if many of those were not exclusive to sony.
Kinda strange that the Bid Daddy is in it since Bishock came out on PS3 over a year after it's original release
Since it's not Nintendo, I'm sure it'll actually have a functional online component. Knowing that, I'll definitely get this if they make a really impressively sized roster. Give us at least 25 characters!
I don't know what clozapine is or I bet that'd have been hilarious.
If its a rip off that does things well I'm perfectly okay with it. (See: Darksiders)
Meh, I don't see why people are getting all riled up about Sony ripping off the concept. (outside of this comments thread so far I'm glad to see). This has happened millions of times in gaming.
It's a drug commonly used to treat schizophrenia. I was going for the "voices are telling me crazy things" pun.

I should... I should prolly just get outta this thread huh?
@Trist

It's an anti-grump med. Tropical Skittles would probably have the same effect though.
ugly ripoff
@OneRed

lmao you actually made me laugh. :D
The devs have stated multiple times that Smash Bros. is their biggest influence, and they're trying to differentiate and improve the formula in their own way. They've never refused to admit the similarities, ever.
I prefer Sony's line up to Nintendo's (realize I'm in the minority here) for a game like this so I'm pumped to play this.
It's so freaking irritating. EVERYTHING essentially rips things off anymore or is derivative of something. So what if it's the same type of game as Smash Brothers.

Fighting games are essentially similar, FPS's are all almost exactly the same, etc etc. As long as it's a good game, who cares. Nothing like the gaming media trying to kill the very industry they claim to support
@arttemis

Oh yeah, because Sonys online has been soooooo reliable. Oh wait...
I don't care much about it being a clone except for the way they've been talking about it being innovative and bla bla bla.

Personally, I think a little competition for Smash will make the next Smash better. Its gonna force Nintendo to make better stages (me and my friends only play Custom stages made with a hack, melee stages and Final Destination and one or two stage other Brawl stages) and not just make a game with roster updates (Subspace Emissary was fun though!).
2$ DLCs are better suited to include roster updates than buying another 60$ game.

I know I'm still gonna play this game knowing its a shameless ripoff.
Seems like it'll be a fun game with friends and beer.
I don't care it's a clone, I love Smash Bros. and I reckon I'm going to love this.
Where's Toro and Kuro?
"There's no escaping the fact: PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is one of the most blatant and shameless rip-offs seen this generation"

There's also no escaping the fact that every damn blogger is gonna keep repeating the same damned thing on and on.
If Kevin Butler isn't a secret character, it'll be the missed opportunity of the century.
@THEhambugl3r

Umm... yeah... it actually works unlike Nintendo's...
This is going to make multiple appearances at our schools game club.
Why the hell hasn't MS jumped on this bandwagon yet? I can see it now: Marcus Fenix fights Ghost from CoD! The Dovakin promo guy fights Master Chief! Major Nelson fights Jessica Chobot! How droll!
Dont know why people keep saying this, Playstation All-Stars is NOT a copy of Smash brothers, Nintendo did however create a new genre with (I think) the first party based brawl game. Power Stone, Cartoon Network Punch Time Explosion, Jump SuperStars, Viewtiful Joe Red Hot Rumble, and Playstation AllStars are just a few of the games that are the same genre and have MANY similar mechanics yet none have the same rules and play exactly the same.

The only reason more games like this dont exist is more than likely because of two reasons:

1. There aren't many studios/companies that own enough diverse characters that would work in a party based brawler

2. (Cases like Jump All Stars, the CN brawler, and to a lesser extent Marvel vs. Capcom's fighting games) Its hard to get all the separate companies to sign for the rights to use the characters in your game.
I am still wary of the way you gain points in this game with only super attacks, it still sounds fun but i'll wait for reviews.
Didn't one of the offical playstation promo vids for all stars have "super smash bros" in the tags?
I've never been much of a Smash Bros fan, I was hoping for a 3D brawler sort of similar to Power Stone, Dissidia, or Anarchy Reigns. I'll play a friend's copy out of curiosity, but I probably won't get much mileage out of it. I hope they announce more characters from the PS1 & PS2 era.
Super Smash was meh to me, so I'm guessing this'll be the same.
lol, based on every preview made by non-biased journalist - the game is unbalanced mess with many characters being completely useless(Parappa) and others being ridiculously overpowered to the point of automatically winning matches by default(Nathan Drake).
not to mention the shameless copying of Smash Bros animations and attacks.
@sofik
Of course you're the pinnacle of objectivity and are going to bring us a fair and completely balanced review.
...now I want some Skittles.
I think Capcom's aversion to Viewtiful Joe Red Hot Rumble being called a Smash Bros clone actually hurt the game, as they ended up making a melee brawler that lacked basic melee brawler functionality. It was like taking Smash Bros and making Coin Battle the only game mode option.

There was also the Hudson DreamMix TV World Fighters, with its somewhat clunky life system. And two Digimon Rumble Arena games (the former suffered from only being two player, the latter suffered because it seemed to have a production and polish budget composed of the spare change found in the reception area sofa.) I think there was a Groove Adventure Rave one for a Nintendo handheld that used a tug-of-war style life system.

I wouldn't really count Powerstone as the same genre though, as the 3D melee fighters do tend to feel a bit different than the 2D ones.
"Sony's refusal to admit what it's doing"

Actually, the official trailer that was uploaded to Sony's Youtube account was given the tags 'super smash bros' and 'ssb'. Sony put Super Smash Bros in the tags of their own trailer. So they may not have stood on stage and loudly proclaimed "Yes, we are ripping off Nintendo, cram this in your cake hole!", but they certainly haven't pretended they're not a rip-off either.
To reiterate, here's a screengrab of it.

And Joystiq's report on it
http://www.joystiq.com/2012/06/04/sony-tags-playstation-all-stars-as-super-smash-bros-on-youtub/
@Freakydemon,
Nathan Drake - range combat thanks to a gun, with "super" that pretty much kills everyone on the screen.
Parappa - melee fighter with "super" that's basically an uppercut that not only is easily avoidable, but also thanks to poor hit detection apparently doesn't work 9/10 times if you manage to get someone within the piss poor range of that attack.
yep, not unbalanced at all.
Oh are we doing the "who should be in this game" thing? I wanna play! My list has a lot of third-party inclusions, because without them, the roster would be pretty empty. Plus, this could be an area where Sony could excel over Smash Bros in that it has a LOT of third-party representation versus, uh... two.

Cloud -- I would almost say this is a gimme. Final Fantasy has been synonymous with Final Fantasy for most people since VII's release. That being said, though, I would gladly give up Strife for...

Red XIII -- Yeah, total pie in the sky dreams, but I'm allowed. If not Red, then Cait Sith would be a perfect addition for all the wacky antics that make up the spirit of this game. Then that would leave room for...

Amaterasu -- Sure, Okami has gone on to grace both the Wii and the 3DS since it's initial PlayStation release, but my favorite game canine has also been in MvC 3, so at least there is a precedent for the character being able to carry her own in a scuffle. Plus, can you imagine how BA the Supers would be, using Issun's ink powers?

Crash Bandicoot -- Honestly, I think PaRappa is the most fan service / history character in the currently revealed line up, but I still think it would be a huge oversight not to include Sony's original ersatz mascot. I think he's a shoe-in.

Gex -- C'mon, admit you want it too. Plus, Dana Gould could do with a little more work. Plus, it's either Gex or Bubsy. I don't think I need to emphasis which poison we'd prefer.

A Resident Evil (and Capcom) Representative -- I'm guessing Leon, Chris or Wesker, but I think it'd be nice to give Jill Valentine or Ada Wong a little play.

Solid Snake -- No text required, will be included.

Other gimmes (at least in my mind):

Ratchet and/or Clank
Sackboy
Jak and/or Daxter
Dante

Other left fielders I'd like to see, but probably won't be included:

Rayman
Sora
Sam Fisher
Maximo
Judy Nails, Pandora or Axel Stone from Guitar Hero
Aya Brea from Parasite Eve
Megaman (& Rush)
Spyro
Tommy Vercetti or GTA3 guy or Niko Bellic
Legacy Lara Croft (Pre-TombRedux)
Pyramidhead (I DARE YOU, SONY)
