Battlefield 3 doesn't have mod tools because EA wants you to buy the DLC. Period.Nothing more, nothing less. Everything else is merely excuses.

Onlive could be great if it had more AAA titles from other companies the only real FPSs that are worth playing are Borderlands and Homefront (and if you are a horror fan F.E.A.R 3) why this is well mostly every thing on the system is THQ, and 2K games with a little (and i mean like tiny amount) from Urbisoft.

As for Battlefield not putting mods tools in,  the real reason in my opinion is that they want you to buy 100 bucks worth in DLC

LeMeAtOm 64 pts

in a nutshell, mods are equivalent to free content, free content is equal to less compulsion to buy DLC as you dont have too to get longevity out of your game anymore, which equals bad business for publishers. So when they are done with DLC, they will consider it just to keep you playing.  I'd expect BF3 will get mod support around middle of next year, after end game is released and sales have begun to decline on added content.

EA /Dice wont release the code for modding not because they're affraid to...

it's because they want to sell you all their 'premium player' s**t  first. Which would be ok if they were asking for around £10 max for all this content; but no...they're asking  for £39.99, which was the pre-order price for the original game.

And for those foolish enough to buy the pre-order (myself included) our game came with 'Back to Karkand'. So in escence they want to re-sell part of our original deal to us.

They are just a two faced money grabbing corporation and if it wasn't for the battlefield series, i'd have nothing to do with them.

They  make out that they dont want the code being used to create hacks, but we all know and seen they're already being used.

I've got no problem with companies that want to make as much money for as little effort....  that's how business works.

My problem comes from when they make out that they're not like this, yet continually ask you to bend over just so they can rape you again and again, screwing every last bit of money out of you whilst they tell you how much you mean to them.

And i realise that this is just one aspect of the whole arguement for why they wont release the code; but to me, it's the most important.

I just played a game on onlive.... and it was smooth and looked amazing.  I have a great internet connection.  thats why.  but i hope it succeeds!

thribs 137 pts

I think the "good internet connection" was the problem. Only a few people have that.

LeMeAtOm 64 pts

thribs too ahead of its time, for the UK at least.... the general bandwidth average at peak times would lead to a less enticing experience for many consumers here. especially on value packages that get swamped lines around these times.  I don't want to say they should have held off as the demand was there for it, but the expectation to pay full price for games coupled with the lack of apple support would have been a disappointment for many like myself I'm guessing.

LeMeAtOm 64 pts

thribs by apple i mean IOS btw, i cant speak for osx.

keichimorisato9 5 pts

LeMeAtOm the reason it doesnt have ios support is because apple wants too much money from OnLive, pretty much all game purchases using their i(whatever) a significantly large portion of the profits must go to apple. they are still negotiating and have yet to give up on iOS support.

LeMeAtOm 64 pts

keichimorisato9 as things stand, they cant really afford to negotiate.

i'll keep my finger sand toes crossed that the new owners of the IP get something going :)

Battlefield 3 needs new games modes to start with.....

VeNoM_JaCKaL 16 pts

Shame OnLive kinda failed. Maybe a technology being released to early Steam?s opportunity may still await Big Picture anyone!

Vojtass 121 pts

No mods = reality in DRM based world like Onlive or Gaikai.

mariuszaga 6 pts

No one will buy new bf3 dlc if they can have free cool mods. Simple.

Gaming modding ended the day the law suit came against a modder/group who created a star wars mod for C&C; Generals Zero hour. That was the begining of the end, when asked why the law suit was brought in, in the first place, the said developer mentioned "in  case we were wanting to build a simular game in the future"

MXVIII 87 pts

vackillers It was a Halo Mod. It was called Halo Gen, and they got a cease and desist order, not a law suit, and they did make a similar game in the future, it was called Halo Wars.

vackillers 45 pts

MXVIII There was a star wars mod also that threatened a lawsuit, dont know which one your talking of, dont remember the halo one personally.. Either way, about a year or so later, Empire At War was released... But this had never mattered before, plenty of people had made mods in the past, that spawn game that was simular to the mod, why that changed now? because developers, publishes saw there was more money to be had...

MXVIII 87 pts

vackillers Never heard of the star wars mod. This was the mod that had the big stink around it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4htJV6cmb0

It got a cease and desist order because microsoft was making Halo Wars. The Cease and Desist order specifically said they were planning to make a game of similar nature in the future

slycatch 98 pts

So OnLive just changed owners..

Gaming modification could be something that companies should explore more.

vadagar1 179 pts

you know what would be the greatest BF3 mod OF ALL TIME...

Battle field 3 : starcraft wars

oh yahhhh.... :D

Seipher85 6 pts

Im starting to get a bit bored of bf3 and uninstalled it from my pc atm, id re-install it instantly if they released mod tools and Project Reality was made for it. it would be amazing on bf3. i still play bf2 to this day because of PR. it makes a good game, amazing. shame Dice/EA. Shame.

I wish all those people at OnLive the best and hope that things will turn out for the better...

Vince21C 62 pts

It was a very smart idea that would have put PC gaming back into direct competition with console gaming for the everyday gamers who do not build their own PC.

Vince21C 62 pts

OnLive was just too ahead of it's time and didn't properly market to the stupid people of the world.

Truth is people are sick of having being tied down by subscriptions and it is a bane of gamer transactions. People inherently know this and thus, will be on the fence about any subscription based business models trying to make it into the norm.

Instead of putting the service for $10 a month they should have just listed it as a 'console' and sold it for about $280 and an additional $60 per yr after the initial 2-3 yrs that should be given for free.

I say this for two reasons:

1) people like the norm, by labeling it as a console you do not have to deal with stigma of being overtly different thus people will be more inclined to try your product.

2) by listing it around the same price of a PS3, 360 and Wii you are saying that this product is equally good as those listed consoles.

There are 12 months in a year and in two years 12*2=24, 24*10= $240. If you list OnLive for $280 you would have made more than two years worth of subscriptions. As per the additional $60 it would amount to $5 a month but hold on; there's more to it as well. The 'next-next' gens are on their way and most people will be in favor of the new thus the life cycle of OnLive wouldn't even be that long in the first place. In addition to this large lump sums payed in one go are worth MUCH more than if it were payed monthly and throughout the course of a set amount of time. This is a standard principle that dates back centuries. Even Blizzard with it's subscription based WoW asks for $60 flat as the starting price. Just get a financial advisor to crunch the numbers for the ideal set price.

Please note that people have a tendency to be jealous, rmb when blueray came out?? Yeah... What bigots the masses are right?

You got to play it smart and fly under the radar when you are carrying a bag full of money.  You don't go bragging about "What is Cloud Gaming" and enlist the subscription based model on gamers which WoW players are actually sick and a little cynical about it. By introducing a vastly superior gaming model while shackling it to monetary model that people already loath is just asking to be ignored in favor of the underdog.

Bottom line, a great idea and a great product that did not get the proper glory it deserved due to poor marketing decisions. Putting ads on youtube is stupid when you consider the majority of gamers have AD BLOCKER!!

Vince21C 62 pts

o and that's what Blizzard did and WoW sold a shit load.

A different service that required a monthly subscription that masqueraded as the normal, everyday game on the store selves.

The wolf that hides as one of the sheep will be the one that gets the kill when the farmers are asleep.

Gelugon_baat 1913 pts

I was hoping that OnLive would be dead for good.  :/

I want this to be a solid blow to the games-as-services business model.

MXVIII 87 pts

Gelugon_baat Why? This service was great for people who game on the go on normal laptops, without having to shell out 1300 dollars. Or for people with midrange PCs, that want to play a game but cant afford the upgrade atm. 10 dollars a month, was a damn good deal for some of the games they are offering.

Gelugon_baat 1913 pts

MXVIII I am aware of the benefits.

But until I see the likes of OnLive implement transferable licenses, I would see OnLive like the rest of those who peddle the games-as-services model.

MXVIII 87 pts

Gelugon_baat That would be progressive. And progress doesnt happen if companies go bankrupt. I hope Onlive finds the success it needs to grow, and adapt. Because if it doesnt, we probably wont see anything like it for awhile, which would be a damn shame, and you still wont get your transferable licenses.

TERMINATOR-SSD 138 pts

they wont release Mod tools because they are afraid of the Mod community will make/do a better job of what EA/Dice can ever do......

SpazldNinjaDude 120 pts

TERMINATOR-SSD Well EA won't let DICE because EA are scared that people will make something better than the restraints EA have put on DICE, DICE would let people have mod tools.

SpazldNinjaDude 120 pts

Mods tools more likely in 10 years for BF3.

Gamerboy006 44 pts

Yay, Laderhosen! :P

Anyways, modding should definitely be implemented into Battlefield 3. Minecraft wouldn't be as popular as it is today without mods.

SpazldNinjaDude 120 pts

Gamerboy006 You think EA would let people mod their game? HAHA

stefan_931 52 pts

SpazldNinjaDude They will let them mod the games.... only AFTER they release BF4 ^^ and when they have sold all of their DLC

SpazldNinjaDude 120 pts

stefan_931 Yer, ok I'll give you that.
