Current club: West Ham United
Robert is a 6’3” goalkeeper who was born in the Surrey town of Chertsey, still professing to be a Woking supporter, but came up through the ranks at Norwich City.
He made his first-team debut in a local derby with Ipswich Town at Carrow Road in April 1999 and finally became first choice after Andy Marshall’s departure to Ipswich in 2001.
He helped the Canaries to the Championship title in 2004 and in the following year became the sixth Norwich player in history to be capped for England at senior level, substituting for David James in the friendly against Colombia in New Jersey on 31 May 2005.
Robert missed playing for the Under-21s and his one appearance for the ‘B’ team resulted in an injury that kept him out of the squad for the 2006 World Cup. He signed for West Ham United in August of that year and was voted ‘Hammer of the Year’ in 2008.
He picked up his second cap, nearly four years after his first, as a second-half substitute for James in the Seville friendly with Spain. He made his first England start in Kazakhstan and retained his place between the posts for the next five games.
Robert climbed Mount Kilimanjaro during a charity event for AMREF.
