Every once in a while, you have the chance to meet someone who changes your life for the better. You may not recognize it at the exact moment it happens, but in retrospect you can look back and realize that the instant that person came into your life, things changed for the better.
I wish I could tell you the date it happened, the date Deacon Tom Fox came into my life, but I sadly I can’t. What’s... READ MORE

Little Picture, Big Heart
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Family on Friday, October 29, 2010 10:31 PM
For years my father has had a framed watercolor of a heart on his dresser. My younger sister was making it for him, but smudged it. Disappointed, she threw it away, but he rescued it and framed it.
I always like seeing the heart, which feels to me like a metaphor for the way Dad loves his children despite and through our weaknesses.
My father is a wise man, and he too draws a metaphor from the heart picture. He published the piece on his blog, and I found it both moving and true. You can read it here: “The Broken Heart”.

Invasion of the Halloween Rats
Posted by Hallie Lord in Just me on Friday, October 29, 2010 11:00 AM
I’ve been so preoccupied with hiding from rats (yes, rats) as of late that I almost forgot to stop in and say hello!
Hello!
I must confess, fashion is just about the last thing on my mind right now—unless you know where a gal might find a fashionable blowtorch, of course. I would be very, very interested in obtaining information of that sort.
Naturally, my mind has wandered to Halloween on one or... READ MORE
"Mommy Brain" Better
Posted by Arwen Mosher in News on Friday, October 29, 2010 9:00 AM
Here’s some good news for moms: giving birth may make your brain grow!
Some new research published by the American Psychological Association found that grey matter volume of the 19 new mothers studied “increased by a small but significant amount.”
I’m no scientist (as yesterday’s post proved, ha!) so I can’t critique this research, but I enjoyed reading about the possibility that our bodies might actually build our brains up in order to equip us to take care of new babies. How cool is that?
You can read more details here.

Not Science, But…
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Family on Thursday, October 28, 2010 6:28 PM
As of Monday I was six weeks pregnant. It’ll be months until we find out the sex of our baby but I’ve already predicted the sex: girl.
This is not at all scientific, but here’s my “evidence.” During my pregnancy with Camilla, I got hit with all-consuming nausea at 6 weeks and didn’t feel much better until about 18. With Blaise, I didn’t even figure out I was pregnant until 7 weeks, the nausea was... READ MORE
Family Rewards and Celebrating Saints

This week on the Faith & Family Live Cast (click here to listen or click on the player above), Danielle, Kate and I recap Danielle’s recent post on “reward systems” to discuss the topic of motivating our children to good behavior. Do your kids receive a reward for finishing chores? Are there other incentives for extra chores? What happens when “bribing” the kids backfires and they expect a reward... READ MORE
