Christ The Mirror

on Bl. Marguerite d'Oignt
Daniele Crespi fresco (1629)

Have you noticed the Holy Father has been doing a series of Audiences on women saints?

This week he took a break to reflect on his trip to Spain last weekend, but I thought I’d begin to highlight these addresses.

Last week he reflected on Bl. Marguerite d’Oingt, the child of a wealthy French family who, as a disciple of St. Bruno, left everything for the austere Carthusian life—eventually becoming... READ MORE

A Moment in Time

Enjoy your weekend of "moments" ...

A moment in time
so quickly does fly,
here and then gone,
in the blink of an eye.

A moment in time
created for good,
so full of potential
to live as we should.

A moment in time
so what will YOU do
with this moment created
by God just for YOU?

Praying for Veterans

Share your names and join in

I highly recommend reading the essay that Rebecca linked to in honor of Veterans’ Day. I found it inspiring and thought-provoking.

In the meantime, in honor of this day, I thought it would be nice to publicly acknowledge the veterans in our lives, both living and dead. What better way to honor veterans than by praying for them?

In the comments section of this post, please list any loved ones who’ve served in the armed forces. If you have loved ones in active duty, feel free to share their names as well. It’ll be our special Faith & Family Veterans’ Day Prayer List.

I’ll begin with my own list in the comments.

Modesty ... Through the Eyes of a 19-Year-Old Guy

Unless we’re sleepwalking through life, we can’t miss the dire situation our world is in with regards to women’s modesty.

I’ll never forget my husband’s face and demeanor when he returned from dropping off our daughter at high school one day several years ago. He was pale. And he was almost speechless.

“It wasn’t only the half-dressed girls that shocked me. What on earth is going on in the heads... READ MORE

St. Gerard, Pray for Us

Do you have a devotion to this saint?

As many of you know, I’m hard at work on my next book, a weekly devotional offering reflections and activities based upon the lives of the saints. No saint book for moms would be complete without a chapter on St. Gerard Majella, patron saint of expectant mothers.

A few weeks ago, a friend asked me if I would be writing about St. Gerard.  I responded affirmatively, but admitted that I was lacking a... READ MORE

"There Is More"

AP Photo/Pier Paolo Cito

Last Saturday the Pope met with 30,000 kids, 30,000 teens & young adults and additional 10,000 teachers for a rally of Italian Catholic Action Youth.

Benedict XVI held a Q & A session during the rally.

Here are some highlights.

First, a child asks him what it means to grow up.

As is his wont, the Pope begins by sharing a memory that shows his understanding of the kid’s desire to be grown:

The best... READ MORE

Our Nation - How Strong Is Its Hull?

We have a simple request, really ...

All the Water in the World

All the water in the world,
However hard it tried,
Could never sink the smallest ship
Unless it got inside.

And all the evil in the world,
The blackest kind of sin,
Can never hurt you the least bit
Unless you let it in.

(Author Unknown)

As we move into the aftermath of the 2010 mid-term elections, there is much to think about.

Soon, many new faces will be seen around the... READ MORE

A Good Habit

How does your family pray for the dead?

On the last day of a theology class I took in college, the professor walked into the room, looked at us seriously, and picked up a piece of chalk. He said, “If you remember only one thing from this course, I want it to be this.”

And then he wrote across the board in big capital letters: “PRAY FOR THE SOULS OF THE DEAD.”

The class, incidentally, was Theology of John Paul II, so this point wasn’t even... READ MORE

Eternal Rest Grant Unto Them

Day of the Dead

Today is the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls Day). And it is also the beginning of a particularly fruitful time of year to gain a plenary indulgence for souls in purgatory.

“An indulgence, applicable only to the Souls in Purgatory, is granted to the faithful, who devoutly visit a cemetery and pray, even if only mentally, for the departed. The indulgence is plenary each day from... READ MORE

One Big Happy

Archbishop Dolan has a sweet reflection for today’s feast.

Lamenting the apostasy of some celebrity who left the Church because she wanted to feel more “connected,” he notes there’s nothing more intimate than the communion of the saints we celebrate today:

We Catholics have believed in this “inherent harmony of the universe” for two millennia, and at the heart of our faith is a sense of union with... READ MORE
