How "black" was your Friday?

I find myself having an unusual Thanksgiving celebration this week.  As I’ve mentioned, I’m in Cambridge celebrating with Eric while Greg and Adam remain at home working/going to school.  We had a terrific Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday thanks to the graciousness of one of Eric’s dorm mates and her family who hosted eight students (and one wayward Mom!).  Yesterday, we treated ourselves to an afternoon... Crossing Genres

For what books will you do it?

Like most dedicated readers, I’ve got favorite genres. And for the most part, I stick to them.

I like realistic fiction, including historical fiction, romantic comedies (clean, obviously), and most of the classics. I generally enjoy stories about everyday life, and I don’t mind if they’re written for younger readers. (The Betsy-Tacy high school stories come off my shelf on a regular basis, for instance.)... Scan or Pat Down?

Which would you choose?

I’m scheduled to fly on Monday and am already dreading the long lines and crowds that I know will take place during the holiday week of travel.  To make matters worse, everyone seems to be talking about the recent changes in TSA screening, the backscatter and millimeter wave scanning units, and the newly changed “pat down” procedures.

I unknowingly have been screened at least twice in recent memory... READ MORE

Sweet Scraps

Are you still a scrapbooker?

Today, I went to my post office box and was greeted by the most wonderful treasure:  a real letter from my good friend Dee Fox (the “lovely” wife of Deacon Tom Fox of Catholic Vitamins).  The envelope contained true treasures - this handmade card, lovingly pieced by Dee, a very nice note and a photo of the three of us taken recently during a happy visit.  The card is truly a work of art, destined... Tip of My Tongue

Last Spring I was having dinner in New York with my aunt and her cousin.

I was relaying some anecdote and got stuck on a word. In my head I knew what I wanted to say: the precise word to express my precise thought. But it would not come to my tongue.

My cousin enjoyed this: “Hah! It’s happening to you, too, now.”

I laughed and complained that ever since our third child was born, this seems to happen... READ MORE

This Day God Gives Me

A song for Saturday

This week, we revisit one of our favorites - L’Angelus - with a live performance of a beautiful favorite.  As we prepare to celebrate all that God gives us, this song reminds me to count the many blessings in my life.  Enjoy!

National Council of Catholic Women

Are you a member?

Today’s post comes to you from our nation’s capital, where I have the pleasure of joining my good friend Jeff Young in speaking for the annual convention of the National Council of Catholic Women.  It’s been such a joy to be in a hotel filled to the brim with amazing Catholic ladies, here to be encouraged in the important work they do in their home dioceses to support Catholic women.  A bit about... No Age Limit

Do you like young adult fiction?

I normally want to post about food on a regular basis, but during pregnancy my recipe consumption goes way down. My book consumption, on the other hand, increases significantly. There’s something about dealing with constant nausea that makes me want to disappear into a novel.

The last time I was at the library, I grabbed the first of Regina Doman’s fairy tale novels, Snow White & Rose Red. I’d heard... READ MORE

Oh. No. Snow.

I lifted the shade this morning, and stood staring in disbelief.

There was white on the grass. On the fallen leaves. On the sidewalk. On the car.

The year’s first snowfall at my house.

Well, if you could call it that. It was more of that snowy-sleety mix that falls in giant clumps and deposits white slush everywhere. No snow angels today.

As a New Englander, I should be well aware of our unpredictable... READ MORE
