Press freedom is the price for democracy

In the past 15 years, access to information has cost 850 journalists lives. So far, in 2009, 35 journalists have been killed and 175 are currently behind bars for doing their job.







This year, five American journalists were detained abroad because of their reporting. Freelancer Roxana Saberi in Iran, Stephen Farell and David Rohde from the New York Times in Afghanistan, Euna Lee and Laura Ling from Current TV in North Korea.All five reporters have been released, but local fixers and reporters in these countries remain under constant constant threat.
