  • Mano-A-Mano, An Educational Scholarship, Empowerment Program

In a joint effort to ensure deserving Hispanic students in the Coastal Bend have the resources they need to pursue an advanced degree, which will help to obtain a job in the port industries or other industrial companies; Flint Hills Resources and the Corpus Christi Hispanic Chamber of Commerce created the Mano-a-Mano Scholarship Empowerment Program.

According to Joe Cisneros, III, President and CEO for the Corpus Christi Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the scholarship was developed in part to address the growing need for qualified workers in the port industries.

"We are interested in helping good people get the training they need for good jobs," says Rich Tuttle, Director, Regional Public Affairs of Flint Hills Resources. "Industry and the Community must work hand in hand to ensure the futures of our young people are just as secure in the area as ours are."

The scholarship is awarded to Hispanic students interested in pursuing specialized training and education in areas that make them eligible for port industry jobs including machinists, welders, engineering technicians, information management specialists and other high-demand positions. Students must attend or plan to attend Texas A&M; University - Corpus Christi, Texas A&M; University - Kingsville or Del Mar College. In addition, potential students must agree to remain in Corpus Christi for at least three (3) years after graduating.

"The City of Corpus Christi and the Hispanic Chamber are lucky to have corporate partners like Flint Hills Resources" says Joe Cisneros, President and CEO of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce" Due to the human recourses and financial commitment of Flint Hill Resources, The CCHCC presently has nine (9) students in the Mano-a-Mano Scholarships program."

Cristopher Balboa, Maricela Hernandez, Terry W. Hines, Albert Juarez, Randy R. Hernandez, Ray A. Hernandez, Michael Olivarez and Salvador Torres are presently working on achieving their dreams of higher education as recipients of the Mano-a-Mano Scholarship Empowerment Program.
