The summit targeted global senior-level policy makers, regulators, industry representatives and leading academics with the aim to develop a common understanding and consistent approach to the regulation of the global offshore petroleum industry.

The summit had representatives from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Norway, the United States and the United Kingdom and, regionally from Indonesia, Timor-Leste and Papua New Guinea and provided delegates with a forum for the exchange of first-hand experiences and lessons learnt and applied particularly from the Montara and Macondo incidents.

It also provided an opportunity for international collaboration to identify best practice arrangements to strengthen existing offshore petroleum regulatory frameworks.

The Summit was held at the Burswood Convention Centre in Perth, immediately following the
2011 APPEA Safety Conference.

The first day (10th) was an afternoon session where Australia and the United States provided an overview of their respective incidents and brought delegates up to date on activities in their countries.  This set the scene for the following day's breakout sessions, with topics including:

  • Culture, leadership and management
  • Incident response and preparedness
  • Environmental impacts and management
  • Innovation and R&D  in deep sea drilling
