Sales Blog 18.11.11

It's been another record month for Sales, with a frantic 9% increase in month-on-month revenue - which means an equal rise in the amount of royalties we've been able to channel out to you, our fantastic contributors.

Avoiding captioning frustrations

An example of a photo with a well-composed story title and caption, from Fotographer Fotographer

Over the last week we have had a few reporters who have reported issues with captioning when publishers have amended their work.

Demotix at the London Conference on Cyberspace

On Tuesday, I attended the London Conference on Cyberspace as a Demotix reporter.

I've included a transcript of all my live tweets through the Demotix account below, but first I'd like to sum up what I took away from the conference.

Photo of the week, 14.10.11

First, let's congratulate last week's winner, Gagan Thapa! His photo of two young girls on a swing at the Bijaya Dashami festival in Kathmandu, Nepal.

In this week's poll, it's back to photos from some of the biggest stories this year. There have been natural disasters, protests, and celebrations, and Demotix has been showing your photos to the world. Here's a selection of a few of our favourites.

Why we're asking for your tax information

We're sorry to have to do this, but unfortunately Demotix is going to have to start deducting UK tax from the royalties we pay to our photographers overseas.

Starting from today, you'll be seeing a message when you attempt to log in that asks you to add some new information to your profile. The information we are asking for is:

  • your tax residency - the country where you are registered to pay tax
  • your tax identification number*

Demotix tech update, issue 1: 11.10.11

Hi there, and welcome to the first of what will become a regular feature on the Demotix blog.

Our tech team follows a work structure, where they work in bursts known as “sprints”. Each sprint sees the team working on a closely-defined set of bug fixes, improvements and new features for the site.

From now on, we’ll be blogging every time we reach the end of a sprint to let you know about the things we’ve fixed, the things we’ve improved, and the new features we’ve added.

So, without further ado, here’s your very first Demotix tech update!
