IN 1913, the faculty of Illinois’ then-independent College of Physicians and Surgeons joined together to purchase its outstanding stock and donate it to the University of Illinois. This benevolent gesture created the state’s first college of medicine. Since its establishment, the UIC College of Medicine and the University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago have been providing superior health care, innovative medical research and expertly trainedphysicians to the people of Illinois, the UnitedStatesand the world.
Situated on Chicago’s Near West Side, the University of Illinois Medical Center is part of the largest health sciences center in the country and one of only four comprehensive health science centers in the United States. It is comprised of the colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Public Health and Applied Health Sciences.
Combined with academic training and research facilities, the University of Illinois Medical Center includes a 507-bed hospital and more than 40 primary and specialty outpatient clinics. There are more than 600 primary care physicians who work closely with UIC’s basic scientists to expand the frontiers of medical care.
In education, UIC is home to the nation’s largest medical school, with 300 students matriculating annually. In Illinois, one in six physicians holds a degree from the UIC College of Medicine.
This combination of education and patient care has culminated in the opening of the University of Illinois Medical Center’s Outpatient Care Center in 1999, and the completion of the UIC College of Medicine Research Building in 2005. These state-of-the-art teaching facilities are providing the people of Illinois with the best care available from innovative physician-educators who are training tomorrow’s doctors.
Moving forward, the University of Illinois at Chicago and the University of Illinois Medical Center have embarked upon an ambitious campaign to seek private support in building a new ultramodern hospital and to continue its tradition of clinical excellence, innovative medical research and the training of highly skilled physicians and other health-care professionals. |
INNOVATION 1999 The University of Illinois Medical Center’s Outpatient Care Center opens a 245,000-square-foot, ultramodern facility that includes a Cancer Center, a Nutrition and Wellness Center and a Women’s Health Practice.
