IDA Slide Set A2 Slide #1 #1
A major university re-did  their outdoor lighting in the name of improved safety.  Let's look at the new lighting.  They used globes.  See the lighting distribution.  Over half goes directly up.  Dark shadows even between the cars.
IDA Slide Set A2 Slide #2
#2
Here is another one.  Lots of light on the roof, little on the ground, no control to put the light only where it is needed.
IDA Slide Set A2 Slide #3 #3
Here we see a student on the walkway.  Note the glare.  Note the dark areas and the overbright areas.  Is visibility good?
IDA Slide Set A2 Slide #4 #4
She moved about four feet.  Where did she go?  She is leaning against the pole.  Is visibility good?  How about safety?
IDA Slide Set A2 Slide #5 #5
Here we see her again on the walkway.
IDA Slide Set A2 Slide #6 #6
And again, she moved close to the pole.  See all the dark areas?  See the bright areas close by?  Glare?  Little or no control of the light output.  Evaluate the safety, the energy waste, the amount of direct up light, the quality of the lighting job.
IDA Slide Set A2 Slide #7 #7
A photograph of the sky glow above a city.  No stars at all.  Very visible evidence of wasted light and of an adverse impact on the night environment and of our view of the universe.
IDA Slide Set A2 Slide #8 #8
Similar view of the sky from a location well away from the city.  Quite a difference!
IDA Slide Set A2 Slide #9 #9
Glare bomb!  Pollution on a pole!  Think of the glare, of the waste.  What good is this kind of bad lighting.  Who gains?  Who loses?
IDA Slide Set A2 Slide #10 #10
Glare bomb lighting a tree, not doing a good job for the parking lot.
IDA Slide Set A2 Slide #11 #11
Another glare bomb.  Was the task to light the tree?  Look at the lighting on the ground.
IDA Slide Set A2 Slide #12 #12
Good wall packs, full cut off, good light distribution on the ground too.
IDA Slide Set A2 Slide #13 #13
Sports lighting can be good.  Here is it using full cut off lighting.  Very good design.
IDA Slide Set A2 Slide #14 #14
Here is another good example, using lighting fixtures with good control of the light output.  Minimum light trespass and glare.  No complaints from neighbors.  No wasted light.  Minimum impact on the night sky.
IDA Slide Set A2 Slide #15 #15
Antique (or period lighting) fixture, full cut off.  Looks nice in the day, and at night too.  Good control of the light output.  No glare.
IDA Slide Set A2 Slide #16 #16
Antique lighting fixture on Nantucket Island.  Also full cut off.  The 'gas light mantel' is a fake, the light source is up under the shield.  "See the effect, not the source."
IDA Slide Set A2 Slide #17 #17
Let us do a lighting design.  The task is to the light the pathway between two building.
IDA Slide Set A2 Slide #18 #18
Shall we use globes?  Evaluate the design.  Glare, waste, vision, etc.
IDA Slide Set A2 Slide #19 #19
Or shall we use floodlights?  Evaluate.  What about the glare?  Visibility?
IDA Slide Set A2 Slide #20 #20
Or shall we use full cut off fixtures?  Evaluate the design.  We can even use lower lighting levels, as the eye is not compromised by glare.  We added some of white light near the doors, for better color rendering and a bit of added light at these two locations.
