A major university re-did their outdoor lighting in the name of improved safety. Let's look at the new lighting. They used globes. See the lighting distribution. Over half goes directly up. Dark shadows even between the cars. |

Here is another one. Lots of light on the roof, little on the ground, no control to put the light only where it is needed. |

Here we see a student on the walkway. Note the glare. Note the dark areas and the overbright areas. Is visibility good? |

She moved about four feet. Where did she go? She is leaning against the pole. Is visibility good? How about safety? |

And again, she moved close to the pole. See all the dark areas? See the bright areas close by? Glare? Little or no control of the light output. Evaluate the safety, the energy waste, the amount of direct up light, the quality of the lighting job. |

Here is another good example, using lighting fixtures with good control of the light output. Minimum light trespass and glare. No complaints from neighbors. No wasted light. Minimum impact on the night sky. |

Or shall we use full cut off fixtures? Evaluate the design. We can even use lower lighting levels, as the eye is not compromised by glare. We added some of white light near the doors, for better color rendering and a bit of added light at these two locations. |
