Approximately 15,000 Americans die suddenly each year from the rupturing of an aortic aneurysm. Now, a new research study at Emory is testing an implantable sensor that monitors abdominal aortic aneurysms after they have been repaired. Researchers say this sensor may be able to warn people of an attack before it happens by monitoring pressure in the aneurysm, similar to a blood pressure cuff.
This VNR features a participant in the study who had a sensor implanted, plus video of the surgery.
Soundbites include: Dr. Ross Milner, Emory Vascular Surgeon and Pope Watson, Study Participant.
Emory is one of 12 centers taking part in this clinical trial. A new similar trial will get underway this June. Dr. Milner says in the future, patients may be able to be monitored from home by putting a phone receiver to their abdomen and the reading will be sent directly to their physician.
