Reiki Energy Healing

Reiki Energy Healing is a non-invasive form of energy medicine that originated in Japan. The word Reiki is made up of two Japanese words: Rei (universal spirit), and ki (energy). Thus, the word Reiki is generally taken to mean "universal life energy."  Reiki energy healing is an increasingly popular form of holistic healing therapy in the West.

As with other forms of energy medicine, practitioners of Reiki energy healing believe that a vital energy force permeates the universe.  This energy flows within and around everyone. According to practitioners of Reiki energy healing, illness arises when there are disturbances in a person's energy field.  During healing sessions (see below), the Reiki practitioner channels energy to improve the flow and balance of energy within the person.  Reiki energy healing is safe for people of any age or physical condition. Reiki therapy has three goals:

  • Raise the level of ki in and around the person being treated.
  • Reduce the amount of negative energy affecting the person.
  • Heal the pathways for ki within the person.

Reiki Healing Session

The time required for a Reiki energy healing session varies, but practitioners generally schedule their sessions for 45-60 minutes.  In a Reiki session, the person who has sought healing remains fully clothed. He or she may lie flat or sit upright. The key is that the person and the practitioner feel comfortable, relaxed, and at peace.  The Reiki healer may try to enhance these feelings through soft lighting and relaxing music.

When the person is comfortable, the practitioner of Reiki energy healing will place his or her hands hands lightly on, or slightly above, the person's body. The hands of the healer are held palms down with fingers and thumbs extended. When the healing begins, the Reiki practitioner will move his or her hands to particular locations on the body, following a specific routine.  There are 12-15  Reiki hand positions.  The practitioner will stop at each position to transmit energy. The practitioner will pause at each location until the flow of energy seems to subside or stop.  As the flow of energy subsides, the healer will move to another hand position, working from head to feet.

The sensation of heat is often taken as an indication of Reiki energy flow.  However, a wide range of sensations may be reported by both the healer and the recipient. Among other things, a tingling, coolness, warmth, or the sensation of colors may be experienced.

According to Reiki practitioners, people typically leave a Reiki energy healing session feeling relaxed and serene. However, sometimes recipients of Reiki therapy will experience what practitioners call a cleansing crisis. They may feel nauseous, dizzy, weak, or headachy. According to practitioners of Reiki energy healing, these symptoms are result of the body getting rid of toxins and realigning itself to the flow of ki. While Reiki therapy can have an immediate positive impact on a person, certain conditions require multiple sessions.
