The Crown Prosecution Service's warning that British Muslims face a possible life sentence for going to fight in Syria is baffling.

The UK Government is opposed to the Assed regime and was, until recently, sending non-lethal aid to the Free Syrian Army. Why suddenly should opposing the regime, in line with foreign policy, be a reason to land one in jail? Second, this approach seems out-of step with the stance adoptd towards past-conflicts, such as the fight to topple Gaddafi.

In countless TV interviews British fighters have reiterated the view that they are there to help the Syrian people and ready to die for the cause.

Listening to their views should be at the heart of forming policy.
