What we most urgently need right now to #BringBackOurGirls

Thanks to the support of media celebrities like Lauren Laverne, the Twitter channel @BringGirlsBack has been flooded with hundreds of new followers.

The level of outrage is reaching record heights. What we need to do now is channel this outrage into meaningful action that will make an actual difference in the lives of the poor abducted girls.

Why Twitter is blocking @BringGirlsBack and how followers make all the difference

What is Boko Haram?

As I understand, Boko Haram means "Western education is forbidden" - something I personally find amazing. The group's ultra violent reaction to modernity is uniquely extreme. The media ignores these stories but the numbers of victims in the kidnapping and in previous attacks by the group are devastating. What can cause such hate and readiness to use violence? The civil war was very violent and political power is uneasily shared between largely Christian/traditional south Nigeria (in charge for longtime) and the largely Muslim north (more neglected and poor).

My family archives from Baghdad to Manhattan

I thought people might be interested in this but I'm not sure how to present it best on my website. Below is an article that relates to an archive from the Iraqi Jewish community that have caused a controversy between the two countries at some small level. As it happens, much of the archive was taken forcibly from a synagogue in Baghdad that was founded by my family member. The synagogue functioned as a school as well as a center for religious events so many of the documents are personal belongings like school records. Other items like old torahs and religious documents are included too.

Peace at Dadaab.

In the last 3 years as close as i can remember, my ears had never stayed without hearing the sound of a gunfire, fortunately i haven't heard about 3 Months, which sounds security has really improved with #Dadaab refugee camps.
I and the rest of #Dadaab refugees are cheering for that.
Stay optimistic and keep calm!!!

Pierre Perret: Mon p'tit loup

This is a popular great French song of friendship against violence, and particularly rape. Pierre Perret is loved by most French people, and much admired for his simplicity and frankness.

[Fr.] [En.]
{Refrain:}
T'en fais, pas mon p'tit loup,
C'est la vie, ne pleure pas.
Tu oublieras, mon p'tit loup,
Ne pleure pas.
Don't worry sweetheart
That's life, don't cry
You will forget, sweetheart
Don't cry.

Pennsylvenia Governor Tom Corbett and the oil industry

The main electorial issue in Pennsylvania is the attempt to replace Governor Tom Corbett. Corbett was elected with the huge financial assistance of the gas drilling (and fracking) industry. Corbett ran in 2010 promissing to keep the drilling in Pennsylvania by not over-regulating or over-taxing the industry. The end result of a state totally controlled by Republicans was no severance fee for natural gas and almost no regulations on the drilling industry.
