William Fichtner to Make 'Ninja Turtle' Soup as Shredder

10 hours ago | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

In 2008's "The Dark Knight" William Fichtner was the first victim of Heath Ledger's The Joker, but now he's looking to do some victimizing of his own as one of comic book-doms most iconic villains.

Fichtner, who also plays main bad guy Butch Cavendish in next month's "The Lone Ranger," has revealed to Huffington Post that he's going to lead the Foot Clan as Shredder in Paramount's big-budget reboot of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," currently shooting in New York.

"I play Shredder. It is cool," Fichtner said matter-of-factly. "It's one of those things that came along where I thought, 'Really? Let me think about this for a minute.' [Laughs] Then I was like, 'Yeah, Ok, this sounds like a journey.' I'm very glad that it worked out, I'm really glad that I'm doing it."

The solid character actor had previously worked with "Ninja Turtles" producer Michael Bay on both "Armageddon" and "Pearl Harbor, »

Anna Kendrick Will Go 'Into the Woods' as Cinderella

10 hours ago | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

Ever since Disney announced it would film an adaptation of the Broadway classic "Into the Woods," several A-list stars jumped at the opportunity to make the trek — Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp, Chris Pine, Jake Gyllenhaal and Emily Blunt, to name a few. Now, it seems Anna Kendrick is getting fitted for her glass slippers in preparation for a journey into the forest as the film's Cinderella.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kendrick  is in negotiations to play the "Woods" version of Cinderella. However, there's no glass-slipper-doe-eyed romance here. Cinderella is the apple of an egotistical (and not so monogamous) prince's eye; this leaves poor 'ole Cindy lost and yearning for more (maybe gold slippers?).

"Into the Woods" takes many fairy-tale characters and puts them on one big chessboard. It tells the story of a baker and his wife,  played by James Corden and  Emily Blunt respectively, who venture deep into the woods (hey, »

Tour the World's Creepiest Abandoned Theme Parks

just now | FEARnet | See recent FEARnet news »

Recently we've been revealing a variety of ghostly photos taken at abandoned locations around the world (like this spooky gallery of long-vacant Us movie theaters, schools, prisons and factories), but there's something about the faded, crumbling decorations of a long-dead amusement park that really heightens the creep factor.     That's why we singled out this compilation of images curated by io9 for a closer look. Gathered from a variety of locations from the Us, Europe, Asia and more, these theme parks in various states of decay have some sad, mysterious and even frightening stories to share... like Six Flags New Orleans, shut down since Hurricane Katrina in 2005...     ...this Ukrainian park that never saw its 1986 grand opening due to the Chernobyl nuclear plant disaster...     ...a South Korean park where this rollercoaster claimed two lives in the '90s...     ...and this Japanese park, also the site of multiple deaths.     Other creepy ghost parks include regions of Tanzania, »

Walk of Fame Honoree Jerry Bruckheimer Is That Rare Species: The Branded Producer

just now | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

That Jerry Bruckheimer is getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is extraordinary — mostly because he doesn’t already have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

“They’ve been neglecting me for years, what can I say?” quips the producer of “Top Gun,” “The Pirates of the Caribbean” movies and such Emmy-monopolizing series as “The Amazing Race.” “Actually, it had been offered before and we wanted to wait for the right time, and “The Lone Ranger” is the right time.”

The fact that Bruckheimer would synchronize both his kemo sabe moment with postcard Hollywood and a plug for his latest project, which stars Armie Hammer in the title role and Johnny Depp as his sidekick Tonto, reveals the kind of promotional instinct that has governed his four-decade career in film and television, and made him that rare animal: the branded producer.

There have been others, of course: David O. Selznick. »

Liam Neeson's Newest Skill Is Earning $20 Million Dollars To Return For 'Taken 3'

34 minutes ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

"I don't think it's going to happen, I can't see a possible scenario, that audiences wouldn't go 'Oh, come on. She's taken again?'" Liam Neeson said last fall about a possible "Taken 3." "Unless we do one where I give her away." But it looks like the actor has found a plausible scenario, one that involves a lot of cash being paid for him to return to the action franchise. Deadline reports that Neeson is about to earn $20 million for reprising his role as Bryan Mills, the retired CIA dude always pulled back into action to save his family. This always seemed pretty much inevitable, and screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen -- who is co-writing the new script with Luc Besson -- said as much last year, when he indicated Fox was looking to make a sequel. And with good reason. "Taken 2" earned a staggering $376 million worldwide despite being terrible, »

Film Review: ‘American Revolutionary: The Evolution of Grace Lee Boggs’

53 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Singling out the most intriguing of her numerous namesakes from 2005′s “The Grace Lee Project,” Korean-American documaker Grace Lee pays tribute to a remarkable social activist in “American Revolutionary.” Known for her landmark work on behalf of black communities during the civil-rights era, as well as her FBI-rattling rise within the Black Power movement, 97-year-old Detroit fixture Grace Lee Boggs doesn’t just explode the docile-Asian-female stereotypes Lee set out to question with her earlier pic; she makes an inspiring case for self-determination and intellectual fortitude regardless of background. She also reps the sort of feisty, irresistible camera subject that will lend this lively and intelligent documentary a decent fest profile (it took the audience award at the Los Angeles Film Festival) and strong broadcast potential.

“You don’t choose the times you live in, but you do choose who you want to be,” Boggs says, and her own life »

Liam Neeson Signs $20 Million Deal To Make Taken 3

1 hour ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

You guys remember the 1992 Steven Seagal action-on-a-boat flick Under Siege, right? It came right at the tail end of the action hero renaissance popularized by the Die Hard films, among many others. It wasn.t a fantastic movie or anything, but it was goofy and enjoyable, and wasn.t a waste of anyone.s time. Then a few years later, they moved the action to a train, and it became one of the many forgettable action sequels that fail to live up to the original. It.s been 18 years since Under Siege 2, and just the other day, Seagal was talking about making another sequel. And you know what? I would probably watch it, because even if it still ended up being ridiculously similar to the original with minimal changes, it.s still been 18 years. It has only been eight months since Olivier Megaton.s Taken 2 hit theaters, however, but »

Warner Bros. No Longer in Legendary’s Future

While Legendary Entertainment’s Thomas Tull is still talking to multiple studios about a new distribution and potential co-financing deal for its movies, Warner Bros. isn’t among them. Tull is set to end his production company’s eight-year partnership with the studio as their contract comes to an end.

Legendary and Warner Bros. have opted to part ways rather than continue discussions about extending their deal, sources close to both parties confirm to Variety.

The decision now enables Tull to move forward with more serious talks with the three interested studios looking to lure Legendary to their lots: Universal, Sony and Fox.

Legendary’s goal is to have a new deal in place before the July 4th weekend, according to multiple sources, with Tull saying any studio it decides to partner with would have to agree to “help fulfill the grand vision” he has to build a larger entertainment »

Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer Unveil ‘The Lone Ranger’ at California Adventure

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Ready for its masked man to ride off into the box office sunset, Disney hosted the premiere for “The Lone Ranger” at California Adventure, in Anaheim, on June 22, with stars Johnny Depp (who plays Tonto) and Texas Ranger Armie Hammer greeting fans separately on the 1,500 feet of red carpet that winded its way from the entrance of the theme park to the 2,000-seat Hyperion Theater. One of the film’s locomotives and the white horse that portrays the Lone Ranger’s Silver, were also on hand, along with co-stars William Fichtner, James Badge Dale, Barry Pepper and Ruth Wilson.

“It was paramount to get the chemistry right,” said Jerry Bruckheimer of the pairing of Depp and Hammer. “We were writing this for a young Jimmy Stewart character. There are no Gary Coopers out there anymore. When Armie put on the mask he was the guy.”

Daniel Radcliffe Could Be Joined By Toby Kebbell Or Jack Huston In New Frankenstein Adaptation

When it was announced earlier this month that 20th Century Fox had officially announced a release date for their upcoming version of Frankenstein, it was a clue that the production is finally ready focus on putting all of its pieces together in order to get ready for cameras to start rolling. It was revealed that Fox wants to have the movie ready to be released in theaters on October 17, 2014 - just in time for the celebration of Halloween - and while they have some key positions set, there's still quite a bit of work to be done. Screenwriter Max Landis, who wrote Chronicle and made headlines recently for bashing Zack Snyder's Man of Steel, has penned the script; Paul McGuigan, who hasn't directed a movie since 2009's Push, is helming the film, and Harry Potter himself Daniel Radcliffe is attached to play Igor. Former Senator Rick Santorum Is Running A Movie Studio Now

As a site dedicated to entertainment news, we don't often discuss politics. But today the topics of movies and politicians have unavoidably dovetailed, so let's talk Rick Santorum. The former Republican Senator of Pennsylvania who threw his hat in the presidential race of 2012 has been elected the CEO of EchoLight Studios, a company that plans to "produce, finance, market and distribute faith-based, family films across all releasing platforms," according to Religion News Service. The site claims EchoLight has a "full pipeline of films with established directors and a growing cadre of 'faith and family' stars as committed as the directors and producers." The newly formed studio will release their first feature, The Redemption of Henry Myers on September 1st of this year. Then 2014 will see the release of Hoovey, a reportedly inspirational biopic about Illinois basketball player Eric .Hoovey. Elliott that boasts stars like Patrick Warburton and Lauren Holly, and »

Why ‘Monsters U’ Skewed Younger Than Previous Pixar Toons

2 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Pixar arguably is the most grown-up animation brand out there — but not this weekend.

Only 27% of the moviegoers who went to see “Monsters University,” the 14th film from the Disney-owned toon shop, were single adults, couples and teenagers. That’s a surprisingly modest share, especially since the film wound up grossing an impressive $82.4 million domestic opening, the second-highest debut for a Pixar film (behind “Toy Story 3″).

Moreover, Pixar films normally can rely upon non-family auds to goose grosses.

Toy Story 3,” for instance, amassed a record-setting $110 million this same weekend in 2010, of which non-families contributed 33%. The three-quel benefited from a 15-year lapse after the first “Toy Story’s” release. Last year’s “Brave” also attracted an older audience, with 34% of its $66 million debut coming from non-family auds.

What made “Monsters University” less appealing to non-families? For starters, the toon has had mixed critical response, which may have discouraged some single adults. »
