Pokemon Black and White are getting direct sequels

As is the case with each new generation of Pokémon games, there's going to be a third version to round out the newest set; except this time it's a third and fourth. It seems Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version will be getting direct sequels: Black/White 2

If you've been keeping up with the latest entries to the series, then you'll know that Reshiram, Zekrom, and Kyurem filled this gen's "Legendary" roles with the former two gracing the games' covers. Had Game Freak stuck to their trend, this third game would feature Kyurem on the cover and most likely be dubbed the Gray Version. They didn't, and it isn't; this has me interested. The single image released so far shows what appears to be a fusion of both Reshiram and Zekrom with Kyurem. Since they were both originally the same being, that makes a lot of sense.

On the whole, I've loved the direction the series has gone in with the latest games and the idea of a direct sequel has me pretty excited. Look for it later this year on the plain ol' not-3D DS.

Legacy Comments (will be imported soon)

It makes sense. B/W ended on a cliffhanger. I didn't think much of it at the time because Pokemon games didn't get direct sequels.
What the actual fuck?!? This has far reaching implications, as in maybe Nintendo WASN'T lying when they said they weren't going to make a pokemon grey. Does that mean they weren't lying when they denied making a 3DS lite? Am I going to have to buy a plain ole 3DS?
Bit of frustrated with the original Black/White, and even more with this one.

I would prefer if they spent one or two more years to launch B/W for the 3DS with full 3d world and characters.

The series just deels the same since gen 2. And that's kind of sad, I really used to like it. =/
Just take my money already
#whatwait?
I have to admit, I did not see that coming. I'm still really confused about how a direct sequel would work for Pokemon. I mean, would you have to transfer your team from the first game? Are you the same character? Did that obnoxiously inept Bianca die in a fire?
SO MANY QUESTIONS!
I'm game,sure I would have liked it to be for the 3DS,but then again the 3rd game is never in a different handheld than the first 2.

Okay,sign me up for White 2.
2? Did Nintendo finally run out of subtitles?
Also,is it just me,or does it look like Kyurem took over them in a viral way,they like unnatural and angry,you know,like regular Kyurem.

It looks like Kyurem was mad jelly of the ying-yang twins and wanted some of that spotlight...so he possessed them.
I'd be less annoyed by this if it was going to be on the 3DS, after they said there wouldn't be a sequel. Oh well, know better next time.
@LegendPenguin
I'm pretty sure they said there wasn't going to be a Grey version. I don't think they've ever said there wouldn't be a sequel. If they did I imagine a lot of people would have taken it the wrong way.
I'm loving the white kyurem
I'm really surprised they didn't announce Grey. As long as these games take the role of Grey in the pokemon release pattern and are not sequels then the Ruby/Saphire remakes can't be too far off which is what I'm really looking forward to.

One other thing to add, the games are lined up for a June release in Japan.
I'll be waiting for Super Pokemon White 3D Edition 2
That's cool Nintendo is still supporting the DS, but I feel like the 3DS needs more love and support. Especially in North America.
@Talking Dreads - You wanna try again? That one sucked.
And here I was thinking Black and White were going to be the DS's swan(na) song. I'm definitely excited.

This announcement raises about as many questions as it answers, though. For one, it explains the two bizarre moves that were speculated to be signature moves for Kyurem, and (if memory serves) were never made available in-game: Freeze Bolt and Cold Flare, which are ice-type moves that paralyze and burn, respectively. It also partially explains why nothing was really done with Kyurem in Black and White...you just sorta caught it and went on your merry way.

But I'm curious as to how these cover pokemon will work. Will they be Dragon and Ice AND Fire/Electric type? Will they be forms of Kyurem in the same way that Giratina had multiple forms in Platinum?

...actually, I should probably stop nerding out :P . Needless to say, I'm super pumped for these. While I loved Pokemon Black and White, there were a few small problems that I think these sequels could really take care of: namely the unchallenging gym leader fights and the lack of level appropriate post-game content immediately after finishing the story.

Gotta catch 'em all.
Huh that's a curve ball.
@BlueTwist I'm hoping they're Ice and Fire/Electric. Don't think we've had an Ice/Fire type yet...
No need to thank me, I work for the good of the people!
@Gaidenrider My previous comment made it seem like I was sarcastically asking for a "thanks to gaidenrider". I want to inform you all that this is not the case. I posted a comment saying that black and white 2 was announced, but given that this news was posted almost immediatly as I posted my comment (not after), it's obvious that they didn't get the tip from me. Sorry if it sounded otherwise
@BlueTwist
I was thinking that they would be fire/ice, electric/ice, and it would have an ability that would treat it as a dragon. But who knows, fire/ice seems like an interesting combo.
It definitely wouldn't have been Silver version. That game already exists. Twice.
I'm not sure which is worse: the fact that rather than releasing one game that merges the two versions into an awesome one they're going to have to make us choose one version or the other, the fact that despite the 3DS being out for almost a year it's coming out on the DS, potentially overshadowing whatever Nintendo has for the 3DS, or the fact that I already have my credit card ready to preorder the Black version.
I did not see this coming. I honestly don't know what to make of it.
Every time I tell to myself this is the last pokemon game I'll buy, only to end up buying it >_<
I was hoping they had been working on an evolution (no pun int.) of the series for 3ds. I hope these turn out to have some kind of change-up or something. Still would rather them take some time off pumping out stuff and take the series to the drawing board. Haven't cared since gba days. Happy for everyone that likes this though.
@PenguinPrime
A Fire/Ice Pokemon would be pretty sweet in theory,but it would have so many weaknesses that it would just make a cameo appearance in any battle before getting its ass kicked,hell,a Stealth Rock would probably 1KO the poor thing.
I can just tell the idea behind this is to convince people (like me) who won't buy a new pokemon game unless it comes with new pokemon. Black/White is my favorite gen of Pokemon, I'm sorry G/S/C.

What do you call a dinosaur that hacks?

Haxorus.
Pokemon Gray and Off-White?
@ Meryc - Yeah, you're right. Still, I probably won't drop into this as fast as I did with White.
Am I the only one who has hated all the DS Pokemon games? I still play the GBA ones regularly, but something about the recent ones bugs me... plus, I really disliked Black and White, so I wont be picking these up
this is a day i thought i would never see! breaking the pattern of 2 initial games, and making a third updated version. actually doing a pair of direct sequels, not just an update with a couple story things added.
For DS? Again?
Sigh, call me when you make a proper Pokemon game for 3DS, Nintendo. Then we'll talk.

Even Pokemon + Nobunaga's Ambition looks more interesting at this point.
the new zekrom is striking a groundon pose
These new pokemon are looking more and more like robot-chicken-dragons with each iteration.
This is honestly the first time since the original Blue that news of a new pokemon game hasn't made me a bit excited. I think my childhood is dead =[
I remember being pretty suprised at how short the original Black/White was. After the story, there really wasn't anything to do. After the spoils of Gold/Silver, it felt rather empty.

Now, we have a direct sequel? Hmmm...that's just got me suspicious, really.
Lol is like they don't WANT to support the 3DS.
Its a brilliant gutsy move.

Anyone who thinks this doesnt support the 3ds, or impact it, doesnt understand whats going on in japanese sales right now

And seriously dudes

port or sequel

sequel every time no contest
Pokemon black and white: modern pokebattles 2, hard-on edition is priced at $150 and comes with an actual metal-cast pokeball and the multiplayer now has a level-up system for trainers, coming this November!
Black/White had interesting an story + some awesome new ideas, i.e. choosing the order of the Elite Four, C-Gear, etc.

But it had absolutely no replay value. It's a Pokemon game! Those are kings of replay!!
Well, I loved White, so this is a really exciting thing for me, but I'm disappointed that this is being released in two iterations instead of one, cause a singular pokemon "Grey" version seems more complete.
But whatever, I'll be buying this.
Damn just when I think i'm out they pull back in. lol, anyway so which version do I buy since I have black, black 2 or white 2? Also I really think that the next pokemon game after this is going to be a revamped Ruby & Sapphire, and that will be the first 3DS pokemon.
@LegendPenguin
Never said there wouldnt be a sequel, just that there wouldnt be a Pokemon Grey
tbh, Pokemon has never had a proper sequel before; this is exciting
If you wanna be my baby? It don't matter if you're black or white~
im predicting theyll be named Pokemon: Pitch Black & Pokemon: Sheet White, or something stupid like that.
I`m completely excited for these sequels as they were never done before with other Pokčmon games.
I hope by sequal it does to it like silver and gold did to red and blue like 16 gym leaders, bigger worlds, recurring characters etc.
