Danny learns there's nothing to F.E.A.R. but F.E.A.R itself. Except haunted little girls.
This game was awesome.
Even without the story, the gameplay was AAA+. Compared to similar game like Far Cry (1), this was fun until the end. The AI was top notch and it's still better than most games today.
Of course, it came with some bugs and it required some suspension of disbelief (even for an sci-fi horror story) but overall it was an interesting story that appealed to both military and horror fans, amazingly good game-play (thanks to the weapons and slow-mo, it never gets old) and very, very good graphics.
I tend to think that a lot of what COD 4 was directly inspired from this game, not so much into the mechanics but in the feel of the weapons and the gameplay.
I loved this game, one of the creepiest games I've ever played. Then the series stopped being scary at 2.
Great outro with ghostbusters! Speaking of monolith games... Play Blood 1 and 2. Classics!
Its great that this guy, and other gamespot employee's is making a little gamespot series about some of the older games. I want them to keep doing it. Its best to not forget about some of the older games. Of course they are doing newer ones too, by the same name( Random Encounter) but still. Do Rainbow Six, Random Encounter.
I wanna see a condemned random encounter. That game was really fun, and it scared the pants off me back in the day. It was like silence of the lambs with psychotic vagrants.
This game has an excellent atmosphere; other game suggestions are Sunset Riders [1991] and Darius Gaiden [1994].
Please give us more Escape from Mount Stupid, Danny. This is good but that was great.
I briefly played this and thought it was good, but I just can't play FPS with a view bob - it just makes me feel sick! Then my attention got turned elsewhere and I've not been back to see if it can be turned off.
Clearly is Ronaldo haha. Such a good game, 3 was disappointing though!
The noises he makes whenever something creepy is happening is hillarious.
I loved this game the multiplayer was fantastic at the time, huge lan partys just going hell for leather, And it did have some good moments in SP
I LOVE this game so much. One of the best single player fps I have played, up there with Half Life, Deus Ex and Red Faction 1.
You really need to have someone else there with you.
The show is a lot funnier with two guys bouncing quips off each other.
-EDIT- Yeah you still did an awesome job on your own though. Never die Danny :)
This game is soooo good ! I actually liked all of them FEAR's
Dudes, lets install FEAR Combat, that stuff is creepy for a deathmatch
"You guys special forces or something?"
"Yea, something like that. We're F.E.A.R.! First Encounter Assault Recon, bro!"
LOLLL! Random Encounter is my favorite new show. "What was that noise??"
Loving the Dethklok references Danny, good video. Good game too, I do love a scary shooter :)
This game was fucking scary as shit with the lights off man way better on the pc too
Yeah this was one of the last proper pc shooters. Where's the gore gone from new games??? it's all hollywood sensationalism. I want someone to pick up where Soldier Of Fortune 2 left off.
F.E.A.R. is a true classic, my first "proper" horror game... This and Dead Space used to scare the crap out of me, my brother and our best friend... XD Hard to believe it's been so many years since I first played them. Hopefully Dead Space 3 won't fail, because F.E.A.R. totally failed as a series, only the original is worth multiple playthroughs... :/
When showing off his roundhouse kick to 'Bishop' Danny sounds surprisingly a lot like Jedward.. (either one of them).
Dear god :|
So much love for this series. And don't think I've forgotten how badly the first one was panned by critics and gamers when it was released because of its repetative environments. Gamers are a hypocritical, forgetful bunch :]
@wavelength121 Huh? As far as I remember the first one was raised to the skies by critics and gamers alike.
It was well received but roundly criticized for its love of warehouses and office buildings
@lindallison @Niner0 @wavelength121 This was actually something I really loved about this game, and it was lengthy aswell if you played carefully. The area's were very well designed and finally entering a new zone felt really fresh again. :)
LOOL "NO ONE TAKE YOU SERIOUS BECAUSE YOU HAVE XBOX LIVE HEADSET YOU BOLL!" what a great line xDDDDDDD
I love this game. Though there are a lot of people that said this game was scary, I thought it was merely intense in its hardest, but the Alma stuff didn't do it for me, it was fighting the Replica Soldiers that made it intense. I thought that was flipped around in two, the shooting was a little less entertaining in two, but the scares from Alma were better.
Still love this game. So good. This and Half life are still unmatched in their believable AIs.
Shame not even monolith could match it with a sequel (even valve had a hard time with Half life 2 AI being as believable). F.E.A.R 2 is ok, but with the reliance on Mechs and lack luster story (and that stupid ending... well my opinion) it wasn't quite as good as the first.
I still play the first F.E.A.R every once in a while. What a fun game!
I was going to make a joke about FPS', but it's actually just depressing.
Edit: Oh, I forgot to add: didn't this game get, like, a seal of approval from John Carpenter? I remember at the time reading about them having him play it (because it's partially an homage to John Carpenter among other horror tropes) and he really liked what he saw of it.
@cornbredx JC had something to do with the story of "F.3.A.R" if you can believe it. Dark times I guess.
After watching you roundhouse kick enemies for almost 12 minutes I've decided that I'm going to give this game a shot. How does that make you feel Danny??? You've had a major influence on my gaming decisions!
I still don't expect it to be as scary as Amnesia but it looks great all the same.
Dude you switched your assault rifle but kept the SMG ? Why aren't you picking up all those health upgrades ?
What It's been 8 Years already? And I am still waiting for a horror shooter to shock me again! F.E.A.R 2 was not that scary any more and I stayed away from the 3rd bc it is supposed to be aweful.
I mean I like amnesia and slender and that stuff and it really creeps me out but a horror shooter with great mechanics that scares the shit out of me would be nice. Dead Space is not that scary.
And not to forget.. this game used to be one of the best looking in that time. I remember seeing the previews and it was stunning. And when it came out I just got a new Geforce 6800GT, made the Game look so amazing and more scary! Would really like to see a scary shooter with top notch graphics again!
I replayed this game SO many times, one of my most played single player FPS games ever.
@Psycold Indeed. I think I played this more then Half Life or Half Life 2, and I've played those a lot as well. This game is just so well balanced (with the scare moments and then action back and forth) its still a lot of fun to play.
@cornbredx @Psycold Absolutely, probably had the best pacing in any story driven FPS ever.
