Review: The 3DS XL

Review: The 3DS XL photo

The idea of an "XL" DS alternative has always sounded a bit silly to me. It's just like the system I already have, but bigger? What's the point of that?

Of course, like gaming PCs and iPads, it's always easy to besmirch a system that you don't own -- and like gaming PCs and iPads, having actually gotten my hands on the 3DS XL, I have to say that I can now see the appeal more clearly. Now I just wish that system alternatives like this were available at launch, rather than held back in the hopes of doubling down on sales later.

In short, I'm really liking the 3DS XL, because it's just like the system I already have ... but bigger.

As the owner of a pair of fat, meaty, particularly large hands, I certainly appreciate the larger scale of the 3DS XL. It's far more comfortable to use, with the space between the shoulder triggers, nub, and face buttons situated in more adequate positions in accordance to my needs. After only a short time with the original 3DS, my thumb would feel cramped from bending awkwardly over the nub. On the XL, my hands rest in a more relaxed position.

The overall form is pleasant, and addresses a few issues I had with the original system. For one, the glossy finish has been replaced by shiny matte plastic, allowing it to retain a sparkly look without drawing smudges and fingerprints all over the shell. The finish coupled with the rounder edges make the system look a lot more "kiddie" than the previous model, but that should only worry the most self-conscious of gamers. More importantly, the moisture that would creepily collect on the 3DS screen when the system was closed appears to have been eradicated. You no longer have to wipe two streaks off the top screen every time you open it up.

The 3DS XL opens with a series of cracking noises, a clickiness that some will welcome, but always make me fear that something is about to break. Underneath the bottom screen, the Select, Home, and Start buttons are wider and more prominently defined, making them far less awkward to use and easier to identify. The Home button still feels somewhat remote, making the thumb stretch longer than it should to hit, but it's definitely a step up from the smaller version.

The touch screen has a rougher finish, to the point where the the stylus (now located on the side of the system where it's easier to retrieve) almost feels like it's "scratching" when dragged across. We'll have to wait and see if there's any long-term effect to this, but it certainly takes a little getting used to. Hopefully the only difference is aesthetic and there are no serious problems arising from the new sense of friction.

What everybody wants to know, of course, is how hideous the larger screens make the games look. 3DS games, so far, don't look too bad at all. The increased size certainly exposes the relative inferiority of the graphics as compared to other systems, but it doesn't make them look notably worse than usual. The only real issue is the fact that character models are more "jagged" now as a result of them being magnified for greater scrutiny. As one might expect, DS games don't look quite so hot. They're not hideous, by any stretch, but you can tell they're not meant to run on screens this big. Virtual Console titles appear solid, neither harmed nor improved by the bigger size.

The 3D effect feels less "deep" on the XL, as one might expect from a screen that effectively pulls the viewer close to the visuals. As a result, the 3D is a little more subtle for the most part, although when a game really throws something to the forefront, the effect is more noticeable. There's no longer much of a difference in color and quality when the 3D effect is switched off. I've noticed that the larger screen allows for a bit more flexibility in where the viewer's eyes are positioned. The window for head movement has expanded, with "ghosting" visuals no longer so quick to appear. The downside is that when visuals do ghost, it's far more blatant and unsettling.

Nothing has really changed internally, of course. The Wi-Fi infrastructure is still nowhere near as good as it could be, and performing simple actions like browsing the eShop still require pointless "preparation" stages and lengthy loading. The only tangible internal difference is the longer battery life, which will be a welcome fresh addition to those still playing the crap out of their systems.

I'm not sure that I'd pay out of my pocket for a 3DS XL, having already bought the original at launch. However, for those currently in the market for Nintendo's 3D system, I'd say the XL is the superior choice, and something I would have appreciated sooner. The comfort factor alone makes it an infinitely better system than the original, with the longer battery, smudge-free finish, and better stylus placement acting as icing on the cake. Those with money to burn and a willingness to purchase multiple iterations of the same system will likely be rewarded for doubling their 3DS purchases here. It really is a neat little improvement.

All that said ... and despite Nintendo's excuses ... I really would have appreciated that second nub.

Legacy Comments (will be imported soon)

I fucking hate my 3DS. The hardware build quality feels so cheap and plasticy. The d-pad and buttons creak when they're pressed and the thing attracts dust and fingerprints like a magnet. After playing with the Vita and getting the DSi XL I have to say Nintendo really dropped the ball as far as the feel of the original 3DS. This looks to fix all of my complaints. I can't wait to get one of these and ditch my old one at Gamestop.
"I'm not sure that I'd pay out of my pocket for a 3DS XL, having already bought the original at launch."

Tis exactly what I am planning. The second nub thing I felt was blown out of proportion.

Its better like you said, so I want to game on it
by the way jim did you try BC on stretch mode or 1 to 1 mode?

Because 1 to 1 mode should look identical to what it would look like on the dsi
@JIM:
Ya know, I really didnt like the colors we're getting here in the states, but the blue actually looks pretty nice, in your pictures, Jim.....

It looks darker than what's pictured on the boxshot....

is it darker, or is it just the lighting in your pics, Jim?
This is exactly why I waited to get the 3DS. So going from owning a original "fat" DS to this 3DS XL will be such a nice leap. Can't wait to finally own a 3DS.
^ its cobalt darkish blue

it isnt the turquoisey light blue it launched with that was ugly
Does the Xenomorph come with the 3DS XL?
I dislike the new look they went with. Looks cheap.
Where did you get that alien in the second pic?
Oh, all the fucks that I give about a second nub...
Is it heavier than the regular 3DS?
Early adopters help fund late buyers getting the better hardware, after all.
Does it butter my toast, wipe my bum, and turn into a car? Sorry, I just felt like I needed to ask a question from looking at all the comments... ;P

Also I don't understand how the 3D could be comparatively shallow, the two cameras can't retroactively be moved closer together. It would be like saying the aspect ratio would be staying the same but only the height was changing; It just doesn't make sense... :/

But then a lot of things people say about problems they've had with 3d don't make sense to me, subjectivity is objective and all that shite... So it's all good a'spose! :D
OH NUB YOU DIDN'T
This would be the I purchased if I get one . . . compact portability is less important to me than gaming enjoyment. I tend not to use my portable systems as portables anyway.
Great review! Looking forward to picking one up once it's released. I'm hoping that the "issue" of the sides of the bottom screen rubbing up against the top screen is fixed. Judging from the pictures I've seen so far of the new system, it doesn't appear that the bottom screens sides are raised as much as the original 3DS.
I still don't see the importance of the second nub. The touch screen is there for a reason, and it's more accurate.
"fat, meaty, particularly large hands" Tryin to turn me on or some shit
Its not time for me to dive into the system yet. However its good to know it'll be there, just waiting on Mirror of Fate. C'mon Mercury Steam!
Hey Jim, is the d-pad any better this time around? The d-pad on the vanilla 3DS is way too stiff and hard on the thumb.
Second nub should have been included and a yet another version of the handheld might.
I would buy a 3DS that utilized 3D glasses rather than glasses free. I don't like keeping my head in one place.
but does it play Facebook while I'm in the refrigerator tweeting my oven?

im fine with that :P

guess i might get a 3DS soon huh??
I still have to see one, and put it in my hands to know for sure, but I just can't get over how damn ugly this fucking thing is. Not that the original DS or 3DS are works of art either, it's just this thing looks terrible to me.

The only game I can think of that I want for this thing is DOA. With DOA5 on the way to PS3 this may be the first Nintendo system I pass up.
^ he was running ds titles on stretched mode. Which would look different

If you play it on 1 to 1 mode you have the same screen size as the ds, and it should look and does look identical.
What about transferring stuff from my original 3DS??

Will all my games and ambassador stuff transfer over?

Can I just take the 16gb card out of my original 3DS and put it into this one?
I wish they re-made the 3ds with the improvements of this one but in the smaller size. It just seems to big for me.

PD: ... that's what she said.
Hope you are right, Stealth. I am planning on getting some DS games, I hope they don't look bad.
Look at the pictures there is a 1 to 1 mode shot

@jqm

everything transfers, again, look at my pictures.
@AriesWarlock Don't worry, you can already play DS, DSiWare and almost all VC games in their native resolution by holding either Start or Select during startup. The problem is that when you do so on a standard 3DS, it's then a much smaller window on an already small screen.
traskin: eBay.
@matt

the window now, is the dsi size

the original 3ds had an even smaller size

so they improved it.
Looks like the XL is gonna be the one I finally buy. It's taken quite the effort to not just break down and buy the original 3DS, but with Animal Crossing, Paper Mario, Luigi's Mansion, and Adventure Time on the horizon, I don't think I can hold out any more. With the improved battery life, all I really want now is a second nub, but I have a feeling Nintendo isn't going to bring that in for a long time, if ever. Not a huge priority for me anyways, but would have been a nice bonus.

I personally don't mind matte, in fact I tend to prefer matte finishes, but those rounded corners just get to me for some reason.
My word, did you just slyly try to call an ipad a legit gaming device? For shame! Such blasphemy!
ONE NUB FOREVER
Do want, but I HATE the current US colors. These were the ugliest color palettes for me on the DS Lite, so here's hoping for new colors/special edition bundles.
This would have been a great time to improve the design of the 3DS... instead they Americanized it.

But maybe I am just to use to having my GBA micro and being able to wip it out of my pants at almost anytime and have just as much battery life as the 3DS XL and be able to play some pretty old games without the world knowing that i am not just looking at a cell phone.
I hate the 2 tone color ugly bullshit. Why do they pick the ugliest colors for us?
Sooo do DS games look notably worse than they do on a DSi XL? Because I never had any problems with how they looked on that...
On the touch screen, you said:
" Hopefully the only difference is aesthetic and there are no serious problems arising from the new sense of friction."

...but then you put the 3ds on top of it...>.<;
That can't be good for the screen...@.@
Really pisses me off that the newer, better version came out so soon =x Any added size isn't much of a bother since I've mostly just used mine around the house, etc.
Upsets me that this comes out after I get the Zelda version in December. Just...eh. Nintendo is really forcing me to stop caring about almost everything it is doing.
@Sir Davies, everything transfers and then you can take out the 16gb SD of yours and put it right into the new system, and your stuff that ar in it will appear in the menu. If not, you can re-download.
Plus, while transfering, there are Pikmin. Lots and lots of Pikmin.
Great review, Jim! I'll hold out until it comes in some other colors though, couldn't bear to trade in my beautiful coral pink one for anything red, blue, white, black, or silver.
Ronin4Life: The screen is sufficiently inset that the 3DS wasn't gonna touch it.
no 2nd nub, no purchase
