Sony announces two Android-based tablets

Sony announces two Android-based tablets photo

It was only a matter of time before Sony joined the rapidly developing tablet market. Today, they have announced two new tablet devices they plan to be releasing this fall. Code named "S1" and "S2", the tablets will run Android 3.0 and will be Wi-Fi and WAN (3G/4G) compatible.

The "S1" tablet features a 9.5" screen and a wedge-like shape Sony says, "realizes stability and ease of grip as well as a sense of stability and lightness, offering comfortable use for hours." Meanwhile, the "S2" has two 5.5" screens in a clamshell design.

The dual-screen setup is intriguing. It's hard to judge just from the image (which may not even be the final design) but with 5.5" screens, I would expect it to be very portable and excellent for typing. It could also have some real problems with compatibility. Unusual hardware design is the bane of Android's existence, the other edge of the open-source sword, making it a constant challenge for application designers to make their code work with everything. Add one more to the pile, I guess.

The Jim Sterling version:

SONY COPY NINTENDO LOLOLOLOL SONY SUCKS AM I RITE GUYS??? GUYS? SOMEONE?
@NEXSUS

Nope.
Sony or not, tablets are fucking stupid....
Tablet looks nice, and the S2 is a cool idea, but it looks like it should have a music box or some shit inside it. Should've posted some of those funny pics of them showing off Crash Bandicoot with touchscreen controls on these things. Like 3D PS1 games weren't dodgy enough already to control without touchscreen controls *sigh* Sony smh
Understandable that Sony wants to enter the tablet race, but the one that folds is stupid. Who would want that?
@sexualchocolate

Why? Simple, portable, robust. What's not to like? Googles Honeycomb (what this tablet runs) is much more versatile than iOS in terms of software it can run, not that I have a problem with iOS, but Honeycomb is hot shit. Touchscreens are pretty good for gaming as well, so long as its with games that complement the input not hack it into being something it's not (on screen sticks are lame).
i would wait for the price, features and hardware specification announcements before considering it. Sony always had a thing for manufacturing electronics that at the time of its release was outdated in terms of hardware and was more expensive than most advanced products in the same category, simillar to Apple(just look at their HDTVs, laptops/netbooks and 3DTVs).
I really don't like where this tablet deal is going. Touch/motion controls suck. And yet, the ipad is seeing 50% of it's app sales on games alone. Tablets are not gaming devices. Just because one can, doesn't make it a viable option. And Android/iOS are limited. You want to run a C++ compiler? Steam? Good luck. On a Windows 7 tablet, sure, but not one of these. Look better than most tho.
Video of both tablets up at Engadget http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/26/sony-to-launch-two-honeycomb-tablets/
Meh, Bad timing to announce new Sony product when one of their big products selling points took a shit on them. Then again they aren't the smartest with PR.

I have an iPad so I'm good on that front. I'm a bit blah on Android, as great as it is there's too much bullshit involved and to really get the most of it you have to root the thing. My Droid phone was decent but not as whiz bang awesome as it should be, rooted it and it's great and does everything I want it to. Android 3.0 leaves much to be desired.

Imma pass. They look neat though. I'll give them that.
I like the fact that Sony have made these at least a bit different to the iPad. The DS style one could be really useful around the house as a remote etc. I doubt I would replace my iPad 2 for a while though.
Gee, a Dual screen system with touch screen control and a system that looks exactly like an ipad.

Sony: INNOVATION!
LOOOL @Sofik looooooool hahaha "Sony always had a thing for manufacturing electronics that at the time of its release was outdated in terms of hardware and was more expensive than most advanced products in the same category" Did sony impregnate your beloved mother with the anti-christ or sumfin?! You troll so professionally, you should work for MS's PR. Not because you troll so well (You do btw) but because of your dedication to hatin' and spewing "facts" based on... God knows what its based on., anyways kid you have a future!
Bill Hooks.
SO, does it connect to the PSN for apps? Oh wait, nothing does
seriously whats the point of this? an expensive shitty worse control psx player?

honestly
Dear Sony,
Stop copying other companies like Nintendo. Work on your game library and attracting game developers mmkay?

-C.G.
I still can't see a use for these either. The novelty for the few people I know who have a tab is they can watch porn on it. That seems to be what it does best. I can do than on my ipod and my Xperia already.
@helerious2k,
let's see:

360 and ps3 should cost 300euros in europe.
retail price of 360 in my country - 280$ and that includes at least 1 bundled games(usually you have one newer game like Shift 2 or 2-3 older ones like Forza3+Alan Wake+ODST bundle). you can get barebone 250GB for under 250$
retail price of ps3 in my country - 330$ with no games and 380$ with one title.

3DTVs:
every single manufacturer - from 1500$ to 3000$ for high-end 42+inch TVs with 100$ for one pair of glasses.
Sony - 3000 for the cheapest and smallest 3DTV and over 5000$ for the most expensive one with 230$ for each pair of glasses.

want me to continue cause their laptops/netbooks and mp3 players are such a ripoffs that they would make Steve Jobs jealous. sony was selling in my country 60gb barebone version of ps3 for nearly 800$ and with 2 games for over 900$.
Good to know, what the Nintendo HDS is going to look like, 5 to 6 years from now. Put some buttons, and couple of slide pads on that thing and it could be Nintendo's next HD handheld.
how bout focusing less on tablets and more on getting psn back up and running
People do know that Sony has about a half a dozen different divisions in them, in addition to those divisions having multiple divisions? Right? What their film/television division does is different from their audio/video disc division, which is different from their gaming division, which is different from their computer division, which is different from their recording division, which is different from their phone division, etc.

They are a big ass fucking company and have the ability to do multiple things at multiple times. Gamers are fucking stupid. Tablets are fucking stupid as well.
These look pretty nice; may be the best iPad alternative I've seen.
Just trolled my friend who just bought the 3DS, telling him that the one on the right is the new 3DS
@Malik So what? Sony should innovate not imitate.
@taco, maybe I'm spoiled by the Mac book, but my laptop is small, portable, has great battery life, while running full blown os and programs (read: not mobile "apps") not to mention standing up on it's own and having a keyboard.....

Seriously, laptop > tablet
@taco, maybe I'm spoiled by the Mac book, but my laptop is small, portable, has great battery life, while running full blown os and programs (read: not mobile "apps") not to mention standing up on it's own and having a keyboard.....

Seriously, laptop > tablet
I don't understand a dual screen tablet, but I guess it's cool.
I'll buy it if the pricing is competitive with the Ipad.
@Cynical Gamer,
their entire bussiness(especially in terms of consoles and PCs) is based on copying ideas, technologies and products from other companies. their entire library of IPs is based on mostly nintendo games. their whole strategy in terms of console gaming is to either secure the right to have "X" title exclusively on playstation and if they couldn't they would produce copies of those franchises. that's how Crash Bandicoot, Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter, Killzone etc. were created.
Jesus Christ. A tablet is a tablet. iPad, Xoom, etc...they have the same form factor. Of course, since it's coming from Sony...THEY MUST BE COPYING!!! For fuck's sake people.
I've been waiting for news on the S1.
My laptop is getting old and I'm planning on replacing it with a Tablet.(I have a desktop for everything else)
If Sony implements the Cross Platform (NGP,PS3,Experia) features they mentioned early on,and-or if it has a full USB port,I'll buy it.
If not I'll wait for the Ipad 3.

@sofik "Sony always had a thing for manufacturing electronics that at the time of its release was outdated in terms of hardware"
You described the 360 perfectly here,not Sony LOL
yeah, I have to say that the clamshell design is interesting! The one drawback to the iPad is that it's not truly portable.... I mean it is... and it isn't.
They should announce an online gaming service that isn't down.
sofik, go see a psychologist. Right now, stop what you're doing and go. I've never seen anyone so full of spite and self-delusion based on gaming preference. It's bloody unnerving. I can't help but think you have the potential to do something enormously stupid, and then end up as a Fox News story that further hurts the reputation of gamers in general.

I can see it now: "After international outcry over the 'sofik Incident', most of the world's Nations have come together to ban gaming of any sort. It's now unarguable that video games breed dangerous fanatics. Microsoft has expressed embarrassment and regret."

Yeah, thanks in advance for that, sofik. Thanks a lot.
@sofik
Sorry, I'm confused, how are ratchet or shadow of the colossus rip offs of anything nintendo?
I'm with Sexual on this one. Why not just get a laptop and use that? Better hardware for around the same price. Hell, you can even run Android on laptops if you really love Android that much.
@Cynical gamer

Sony has, does, and continues to innovate. Only the deaf, dumb, and blind ignore this.
@arbsnotdead
Wanna start and orgy? I'd love to join.
@pedrovay2003
That's an easy answer.
Better portability,wireless + 3/4G,Smaller,lighter,"usually" better battery life,no lid,great for reading E-books or watching TV in bed,etc.

Most importantly though....It's easier to hold while you are on the Shitter!

Plus If you also own a desktop I see absolutely no reason to own a laptop unless you need it for work.
@cynical yous be trolling? Lol anyone even with a decent amount of intelligence could see that sony has amazing exclusives not just in quality but in quantity. So does nintendo :)
I take from this that Sony has realised the importance of stability
has anyone seen the new commercials for the sprint dual touch screen phone? looks kinda neat.
the kyocera echo is the name of it.
Sofik's right! Sony's rubbish! Because of them, Square was able to make some of the best games ever on the PS1. If it wasn't for Sony, I could have payed $70 for Nintendo's carts instead of $50 for Sony's CDs, and I would have had to buy an add-on for my Xbox just to watch DVDs! God, and they can't stop copying Nintendo. Ico? Psh, it's not like Eiji claimed that Ico influenced Twilight Princess or anything. Dual analog sticks? WTF?! I want camera control issues, goddammit! Oh, and then there's this whole Blu-ray BS. Bitch, I wanna change my DVDs when I'm playing games!
@Krak

Maybe I'm biased then, because I do use a laptop for work. But I don't know, maybe I'm just stuck in the past and want a physical keyboard or something.
Also, @Cynical

This isn't the first dual-screen Android device, so I wouldn't be calling Sony out for copying anyone this time.
sofik nintendo has been around FAAAAR longer than sonys playstation or MS xbox. so basically every video game out there is some what based off of things nintendo did in the past.
@pedrovay2003
And there is nothing wrong with that!!! I have both a laptop and desktop.
Now that my laptop is dying it's nice to have a smaller option that was not there before.
