E3: Quantic Dream unveils Beyond: Two Souls

Quantic Dream co-founder David Cage came out on stage at Sony's E3 2012 press briefing to introduce his studio's next project, Beyond: Two Souls. Oscar-nominated actress Ellen Page (Hard Candy, Inception) stars as heroine Jodie Holmes, a young woman gifted with supernatural powers that come from a psychic link to a force she calls Aiden.

Cage showed a slow-paced four-and-a-half-minute cutscene followed by a minute-long trailer in which sh*t blowed up real good, and you can watch them both above. The footage led us all to wonder just what kind of game Beyond: Two Souls is, exactly. Cage explained that you will play as Jodie at different points in her life, calling a "portrait of [her] life through 15 years." Sony says you will "experience the most striking moments of Jodie's life as your actions and decisions determine her fate."

When asked by GameTrailers' Geoff Keighley to compare it to Heavy Rain, Cage described Beyond as a "more action-driven experience" that offers "much more direct control" and "much more spectacular action" than the 2010 thriller. So there's some good news for you folks worried about another QTE-fest.

Beyond: Two Souls is currently set for release in February 2013, exclusively for PlayStation 3. Check out 14 screenshots below.

Legacy Comments (will be imported soon)

Looks interesting. Didn't see enough to say I'm stoked, but I dug Heavy Rain so I'll certainly give it a try.
The only thing I disliked about Heavy Rain was the awful writing. As long as the writing in this is improved and there's more action in it, consider me interested.
Baaaah, so many movie cliches. Video games are not movies.
I refuse to beat up a dog.
David Cave wanked himself silly.
Confirmed: Sony Devs have a crush and/or major fetish on Ellen Page!!
Who doesn't, Oishidesu?
@Oishidesu

So do I. Thank you, Sony! As long as I can repress memories of 'Hard Candy', I'm in for a real treat.

Seriously, though, it looks very interesting, but it didn't show quite enough for me to get all giddy about it just yet. However, if it's anything like Heavy Rain, I'm sure I'll be one happy creepy Ellen Page fan.
I was just getting irritated at her silence in the beginning. It went on for sooo long. Like ungodly long. I was getting like...okay...are you sure Ellen Page has done the voice over yet?
I cringe at the thought of all the time and money that's been spent in trying to emulate a bad action flick.
What the hell is Cage trying to accomplish?
call me on my mental hamburger phone!
Why do they direct the sheriff to open the door. At that point Swat was in control and had men at point.

It's little things like that which annoy me about Cage's writing, there's always a logic error in five minutes or less.

David Cage should hire actual screenwriters and directors to make Quantic Dream games. I think Heavy Rain went in some interesting directions, but I wouldn't replay/watch it. Get some crazy art house guy! I want a David Lynch game!
Whoa... Thought I only posted once there o.O

Sorry.
Such a pointed, biting criticism it deserved a triple post just to ram home that clever witticism.
That was a really bad trailer.

I played through Heavy Rain because it looked promising, and was severely disappointed. I thought Kara was good so I was thinking maybe they had made things better, than I watched this. It was just dumb. The graphics are like super duper impressive, but the writing is so poor. I don't want to write it off completely because so little is known about the game, but it looks like a pass for me.
@Tristix and TheNephilym

I think Ellen Page is hot and cute, but once nerdy Michael Cera shacks up with you (in a movie or real life), I lose interest. Sorry, but that's just me!
@Scissors
Jeez, what a negative Nancy! This game has ELLEN PAGE! As long as Michael Sera isn't in this game and doesn't try to impregnate you, I'm all fine!
At least the comments told me who Ellen Page is. I liked Juno, never liked it enough to look up who she was.
Maybe this is what Cage needs, to just embrace the supernatural element in his storytelling and not use it as a plot twist or try to avoid it and create a plot hole ridden story.

Or maybe we could get another JASSSSSSSSOOOOOONNNNNNNNN moment. Regardless I will wait to hear what people say about the story.
I have zero faith in Cage as a storyteller, but Heavy Rain was a fun experience for one playthrough.
Ironically, like many others pointed out, it was the writing itself that ultimately made it less than great.
This looks interesting. For one thing, the character animations are miles ahead of Heavy Rain.

Absolutely gorgeous. This is going to be a great movie, maybe Ellen Page's best role.
Wow if I knew it was going to turn out like that I wouldn't even have bothered.
Heavy Rain was the shit. Quantic Dream is brilliant. Ellen Page is pretty cool. That video was incredibly intriguing.

Sold.
@The Silent Protagonist

Obviously the SWAT team knew something we did'nt know at the time. Why would you send in the swat teamm which she is obviously running against in when you can send someone in that wont make her suspicious and blow the building up? As you saw in the later parts of the trailer, she is lethal. Deplomacy before action, even if it is with your enemy.
Shouldn't David Cage just start going to Cannes and Sundance?
I liked the first bit but it turned me off as soon as the swat guys showed up. Just seemed like a mediocre action film after that :/
That was a ridiculously long cutscene. It certainly has nice visuals, but where's the game? I think I already know what the story will be about too, judging from the cliches, head scar, "two souls" and her psychic abilities. The gameplay will probably end up being a combination of Heavy Rain and Infamous.

I also thought it was funny how they made a point to say that it's realtime. It doesn't matter whether it's pre-rendered or realtime if it's still all cutscene and no game. I like to say that if I wanted to watch a movie I'd watch a movie, not play a game.

I miss when story used to complement games, not the other way around. Not that I'm criticising Beyond: Two Souls in particular, I just wish there was a distinction between interactive movies and games. A lot of these kinds of games would probably make better movies than games.
Ellen Page the game? Sold! I hope it plays like a prettier Second Sight, I loved that game.
The thing is it could be a good game if Cage hired people to do all the work he would. He would be much happier writing angry letters to reviewers than actualy making "games" i think.
Wow it's amazing how much time and resources they spend hiring recognisable actors and filming them to create something that looks kinda close to just filming them! AMAZING! What's with all the violence?

Also it's weird how shitty aspects of the graphics are outside the faces. I guess everything else has to come secondary to that.
The graphics are impressive, but that's about it.
That scene where the cup flies across the room pretty much epitomises the problems with David Cage’s storytelling. They spend too much time lingering on “oh, look how real that coffee stain looks” instead of having the cop react like a real person would to {i]flying cups[/i]. I’m pretty sure I heard the audience cracking up when he just goes “.....................okay..........”

Still, I’d be happy to be proven wrong.
I enjoy David Cage's games. They are trying for something different and while they aren't always successful, its certainly an interesting experience. This looks to be another interesting experience.

How many games is she in?
Holy Movies Batman! Major animation and lighting improvements. Though I thought cage was going all violence free "I'll kill everyone!". Well at least the writing probably still sucks.
it looked like a really awesome movie... but I saw almost no gameplay at all.
Judging by what Quantic Dream is saying... this is basically Fahrenheit with a female protagonist, remove the exposition-heavy first half, extend the action-heavy second half, and remove a lot of the QTEs. Supposedly this one will be a bit more open and less about pressing X not to die.

Cautiously optimistic...
Story looks interesting, but the game play itself looked non-existent considering the style they're taking (which, to me, is a bit of a turn off.. I want to play games, not watch them, if I can help it).

Page is a good actress, I like her, however she doesn't have the face for this.. She just looks off for motion capture. The cop looked great, but she looked.. Wrong.. I think it almost hurts the game to have us know who the actress playing the character is; we stop relating to the story because we're too focused on picking apart how they made her look.

I mean, I spent most of the time she wasn't talking in the video talking to my screen, asking the cop to call her on her hamburger phone; that she'd only talk to him on her hamburger phone.. Thats kind of saying a lot about the impression this games made so far, when we care about lines and scenes from an actresses movies, instead of the game itself.

I don't really know where this will ultimately go.. But I'm imagining at the end of it Sony will be claiming its GOTY and Cage will spend a few more years defending his works.
There's a good reason this game will cost sixty dollars - hiring an Oscar-nominated actress to "play" the main character. I mean really...no wonder it's so expensive to develop when developers make decisions like that. Although, if you can swing it, go ahead and do it. I'm sure at least a few purchases or at least rentals will be made because of Page's participation in it. Though anything other than a first day buy may upset David Cage....

It is kind of sad, though, because it's easy to claim that Cage seems desperate to get out of one business and into another. Yet who knows what the man ultimately is aiming for. Profit, I assume?
I couldn't out down Heavy Rain as I found the story quite compelling, mind you I only paid $20 for it but if this is anything like HR, (which I can assume it will be) I will be getting this at some point!
Looks quite interesting, to be honest. I will keep my eye on it.
BLARFF! So... this is what it's like when your game gets praise. You make three sequels. Dave Cage's paranormal obsession can go die in a well.

And this also applies to John Carmack's endless remakes of Doom/Quake. It's basically the same shit, different day.

Sorry I haven't tempered my gut reaction. I know someone out there will like this, and more power to 'em and such. I just dislike this kinda stuff.
I'd repost the Microcosm box blurb here, but I can't be arsed.
