I've played all of these games, NONE of them come no where near as close of an amazing game as The Walking Dead. That game was actually an amazing and an emotional game, it's really stupid how Journey won. No other game is as great as this one. No doubt about it.

These are GameSpot's nominees for Game of the Year 2012.
I see that perhaps the government is correct in assuming that people who play games are just plain stupid and since the games are violent. XCOM being a game that has real-world reported backing is dismiss for games that are just a fantasy in the head. At least with a turn-based game (like Civ V or XCOM) there is some real world idea to have a Civilization and Society to live in, not some imagined FPS game that just looks good or is an escape for some being violent. Too bad you can't get off of this rock of a Planet and go bang your cups somewhere else in the Universe.
I'm so stunned that Assassin's Creed 3 was not nominated; forget about winning the award but not even a consideration. That's ridiculous. It's undoubtedly and unquestionably at the very, VERY least one of the top 10 games regardless if it's a top 5 game or not. I mean, seriously guys? AC3 could not even get inside the top 10 list. That's so appalling. The only real legitimate and strong gripe about the game that can be solidified is the various amount of bugs and glitches but did that stop a game like Skyrim (which was very similar in technical defects) from being considered as a nominee? Nope. I don't get this and this is ridiculous. This is very silly and I take their whole list as a mockery. Sorry GameSpot but this year your list is legitimately a joke, and that's without question.
I am surprised to see Spelunky. I have only seen gameplay footage and was never very captivated by the premise.Great list, definitely well-thought of! I love the diversity, and I think that really is the key to a successful and enjoyable year in video games.

I think using Twitter to give out skull key codes for gamers was a phenomenal idea by Gearbox. Keeping the game fresh with new DLC's every couple of months and talk of raising the level cap are all great ideas that keepsthe game fresh giving it great value. I think those ideas alone should earn BL2 some recognition.
If you look at design, Direction, engineering gameplay, Story and OST than Journey is your choice if length is what you look for its in the rest.
I didn't realize Mark of the Ninja was good enough to qualify for this. Well, as soon as it goes on sale on steam I'll be buying it.
Dishonored all the way otherwise Journey(never played though based on review and great soundtrack).
Dishonored or Journey my votes.
I liked also ME3 and Guild wars 2 but werent as fresh as the first 2 imho.
Borderslands 2 should have definitely been nominated, that would be my GOTY. I'm surprised Assassin's Creed 3 and Kingdoms of Amalur are not considered for this, too.
Glad Virtue's Last Reward got at least a nod. It's a fantastic game with a story that couldn't work in any other media. Doubt it will win but worth checking out!
It is clear how little taste many of the people on this site have and how easily good quality games are looked over for big name brand games pumped out year after year.
@Toysoldier34 I completely agree with you but you should also mention about overlooked games too
guild wars or journey would be fantastic choices, TBH i could not pick between the two.
Its Gamespot, so the winner is probably going to be Halo. Gamepot love to hype up the Halo, even if it is a mediocre game series.
Guild wars 2 should win if any. After all, it IS the best game this year.
Guild Wars won PC awards against Dishonored, if Dishonored wins GOTY it will not make sense at all.
Its like saying A>B and B>A...
I really think that Max Payne 3 and Borderlands 2 should have been nominated, but with that said I'd still go with Dishonored because it is a new IP. (Id be happy with those 3, Guild Wars 2, or Mass Effect 3 winning though)
far cry 3 is much more better than any of these games.
no more drugs for gamespot staff
@sillypenis Please, by all means, enlighten me into how exactly FarCry 3 is better than many of those games. I'm curious as to how it, a sequel shooter in a sea of shooters, contends to a game that has revived the turn-based strategy game genre such as XCOM has? Or how it competes against a subscriptionless MMO that has had free content updates monthly since launch and has changed many of the genre stagnates such as combat (now action based), quests (dynamic events, no more hubs), trinity (no tank, healer, DPS 3-way), and so much more?
Please, clarify your game's superiority to us all. Enlighten me on it's greatness.
@Deathfish69165 @sillypenis He likes the game, therefore he thinks it deserves the GOTY title, but in my opinion GW2 is the best ;)
Please NOT Dishonored, this game has some nice features but overall too many things to improve.
Mass Effect 3 shouldn't be on this list. The entire game felt like a weak expansion pack of Mass Effect 2.
I commend Gamespot for having a list that is refreshingly different and diverse - I still feel Far Cry 3 and Borderlands 2 deserve to be there. They're exemplary games that show how to make sequels: bigger, better, smarter, more fun. But still, can't complain, great list up there.
Far Cry 3, Walking Dead, Journey, Dishonored and X-Com are the only 5 games that should be on this list.
GW2 all the way since Far Cry 3 got majorly underrated...and ME3 majorly overrated...
