regarding rotating space stations I'd like to point anyone interested to a tv show from the 90s called Babylon 5 ;)

No one will ever see this type of space travel if we don't get the hell off of this planet and start colonizing.

It won't be America or Europe doing this anyway.  The Chinese are going to be colonizing the moon within the next 100 years.

Bang your metal camping mug on the table. Humans are not going anywhere anytime soon being Stuckies on this Planet. I guess the only way to travel to another place and time is through the imagination because physically you are bound to be on this Planet until you die on it. And no doubt it will cost "money" (moo-la, cash-ola) to get off of this planet instead of going round and round and round and round on it.

Hey cam, what do you think the next mass effect should be? sequel or prequel? . I personally think a starcraft style mass effect game would kick ass but that's wishful thinking. Nice vid btw you crazy science man :) .

its kinda sad to me that i wont be around if this stuff ever happens when we're able to go from planet to planet and live on them :/

From what have read the developers for Mass Effect. The story is based around a man who is in some ways a normal man, enhanced with biotics, giving him "super powers". But the crux of the story it in his heart. Her is the ultimate samara. the ultimate crusader. He is an unselfish person who is willing to take on the totality of the universe's problems not for egotistic gain, but because he is holy. He sees the galaxies in desperate trouble and his whole spirit screams for him to answer the call. he is a normal guy, but hi special combination in his soul will allow him to do nothing else. He is Plato, Ghandi, Russell Crowe's character in the movie the gladiator. An imperfect soul lost in the confusion of his life purpose, yet he is obsessed to strive an unknown destiny. I don't know whether his highest quality is his obsessive drive to succeed or his humility in place of a monster ego. Shepard is the embodiment of a true hero and it is a shame all you egotistic super-thinkers missed the boat.

A non-game player who recognized excellence.

@bonefish7679 I like your description of the paragon approach, but I think that the renegade approach is quite the opposite: a cold hearted, selfish, totalitarian, dominating, impatient, get-the-mission-done commander.  He has options.

I really wonder whether we would find the solutions for all sorts of ecological and development challenges out there in space. The Mass Effect series has really challenged our idea of the future, which we believe is filled with all sorts of challenges like ecological problem, with  their own vision filled with prosperity,a golden age for earth.

@gamefreak215jd Your reaction reminds me of the effects that Star Trek had on previous generations.  I wonder if Mass Effect can also inspire a new generation of people to become scientists and engineers who look towards space.  Many people at SpaceX, Virgin Galactic, and NASA grew up watching Star Trek, so I wonder if this generation will follow them in similar endeavors after being inspired by Mass Effect, or will the inspiration just decay into nothing more than dreams?  Hopefully the former.

The_Syzygy

@amdreallyfast  @gamefreak215jd Not really. At least Star Trek based it's technology off of actual scientific theory at the time. Mass Effect requires the existence of a magical element called Element Zero to have any and all of their technology to work.

amdreallyfast

@The_Syzygy  @gamefreak215jd  The communicators and tricorders were basically magic at the time (the tricorder in particular, and the communicators could allow them to talk in real time over hundreds of thousands of miles in space, so basically magic), and antimatter reactions were regulated by dilithium.  Star Trek has its fair share of fantasy :).

But the truth is to achieve that level of development,a global unification is required. With countries busy fighting amongst themselves it is quite obvious that the funds supplied for  scientific development will be insufficient. So I guess it might take us at least a century or two to leave this solar system.Space travel isn't something that can be achieved by us  in a few years.

good narration, im definitely going to check out other episodes in this series.

Unless we can find a way to manipulate space, either by wormholes, quantum tunneling etc, we're never going to travel much further than our own Solar System. The amount of energy required is just too great. Even if we could get a craft to travel close to the speed of light, it would still take 20-30 years to reach the nearest observed star systems. So, unless you're able to go in to some kind of cryo-sleep, you'll most likely die of old age before you make it back. Not to mention the Time-Dilation: Even if close to speed of light travel & cryo-sleep was possible and you made it back; due to time-dilation, you'd arrive back on Earth and 10,000, or more, years would have passed. It's mind-boggling stuff. So, like I said, unless we can somehow come up with a shortcut, we're not going anywhere soon. It's highly improbable that we'll explore our own galaxy and more or less IMPOSSIBLE to travel to the billion, or so other galaxies in the universe.

xlord121

@tizmond Actually the faster you move relative to objects around you = the slower time goes...

So if we were able to achieve speeds of almost light speed than time would almost stop

Therefore we would be able to travel to and from solar systems fairly quickly according to earth clocks

@tizmond That's more realistic in real life. As many have said, unless we do come up with the Wormhole,Stargate,Warp Factor 12,etc., we humans are more likely to cease existing before Sol itself goes boom. Science Fiction/Fantasy is nice to escape life in books, movies or video games every now and then, but I'll except life as it is right now that Me and everybody else aren't going to go to the Citadel or anything similar to it any time soon.

Well in Mass effect all the MAJOR tech all races have they found how to make them in beacons, and the mass relays were just there and the Citadel as well soo they kinda cheated. We need to discover and build all those thing by ourselves unless we can find some cool beacon database thing with good guides and schematics :)

Good stuff as always, Cam...but I think I might've just focused on FTL travel for this one. There wasn't enough meat to make an entire meal out of this episode such as it was.

Of course we couldn't develop that technology on our own, at least not for quite a while.

That's why the mars explorer will find the Prothean artifact that will allow scientists to develop this technology.
