gamescom: LEGO LotR has a nice Skyrim vibe going

LEGO Lord of the Rings is doing a number of things to really differentiate itself from prior LEGO titles. The biggest change is that this one provides a more seamless, open world design to the exploration, akin to that of Skyrim.

The hub world is in the Hobbit village, set during Bilbo's birthday party. From here you'll go down any number of paths to other areas from the movies, and even find new things taken from the books that didn't make it into the films. And you're not going through some magical door like in the LEGO Star Wars games. You're actually going down through pathways and exploring the world to get to where you need to go.

Each area has a distinct mood, from the pure happiness of the Hobbit village, to the rain of fire in Sauron's land. You'll be able to find a ton of puzzles, sidequests, items, and more simply by exploring the world. What really struck me about LEGO LotR was just how much detail each set piece has. Sure, there are LEGO items scattered all over, but the overall design just had a nice realistic feel at the same time. The team has put in 1.6 billion polygons just into the landscape alone, and it really shows. There will also be a quick travel option to get to other locations, which is great considering the scale of everything.

After doing some exploration, we were taken to the castle siege scene from The Two Towers. The dialogue from the movies is all in the game, and while the cinematics are inline with the films, there are some goofy bits thrown in for fun. Remember when the archer kills the first orc before the castle gets attacked? In LEGO LotR, one of his friends starts to cry over his death. Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli then become playable, and the player has to use each of their special abilities to prevent the invaders from climbing over the castle wall by knocking down their ladders.

It seems like each LEGO title just adds more gameplay features than the last, and LEGO Lord of the Ring shines from all that the team is putting into the game. The game will easily appeal to both Lord of the Rings and LEGO fans alike, plus it's going to be a great way to introduce kids to the LotR universe.

Legacy Comments (will be imported soon)

Words cannot describe how excited i am for this game.
This actually looks really cool!
Damn, I can't view this trailer on my iPhone today for some reason. I'll have to watch when I get home.

I thought the first Lego Star Wars game was a novel idea. I never played the whole thing because I grew bored of the gameplay rather quickly. I've at least tried most of the Lego games but just can't get into them.

I'm really hoping this was is better than the rest because I really want another good LotR game badly. None of the games this generation have been good. I was really dissaponted in War in the North, especially because of who made it and the love I had for their past games.

Here's hoping this is good.
Can't wait for this! Lego Harry Potter was all good and well, but this is LotR we're talking about.
Haven't played a lego game since Indiana Jones but this looks awesome.
I want this SO bad, I can't stand it. In fact I've been avoiding all the trailers (til this one) just to try and keep my excitement in check.

This game is like all of my childhood balled into one thing, it's amazing.
"You're actually going down through pathways and exploring the world to get to where you need to go."

Awesome!

But I with there was an option to make the characters mute like the older games. It's so much funnier.
Header: What the FUCK IS THAT
In all seriousness though, LEGO Batman 2 was pretty great, unlike the others (IMO), and I thought the voices were a nice touch. An option to turn them off would be nice, though. More a fan of the LOTR books than the movies, but if this is of the same quality of LB2, then I'll likely pick it up.
I love the lego games, they have all been solid so far. The ones ive played at least
Can't freaking wait! :D
This lego trend is going too far.
I know a lot of people like those games, but I seriously can't stand them anymore.
Why "Skyrim"? Wouldn't "Open-world" be more fit?
@Jack Dandy

it's clever marketing why not compare it to one of the biggest releases last year.
You're aware both Lego Harry Potter games and Lego Batman 2 had a freeroam world right?
All of my LEGO hype! :D
I thought it was funnier when they didn't speak.

It's getting a little too "on the nose" now.
I love how most triple A titles always make small worlds saying they didnt have enough time to make it bigger, but lego created middle-earth in a game that is focussed on kids but has that background adult comedy.

Its easy to tell that triple A is not even worthy of the name anymore.
This is actually awesome.
Fuck yeah!
So it's an open world lord of the rings game... WHY IS THERE NOT A NON-LEGO VERSION OF THIS? Oh well, I can deal with a lego version too though, seriously though, why hasn't anyone thought of an open world LOTR game that is serious?
Time to ride an Ent and ho-slap Saruman. And the wife plays too!
I'm excited for this.. But the environments behind the Lego guys look.. odd.. Like someones made a youtube video with their 20 year old Lego sets.
