World of Warcraft is now free until you hit level 20 photo

For active World of Warcraft players, the week's big news is all centered around patch 4.2, Rage of the Firelands. Namely, it's out! This is the page to see if you're wondering what's new.

More interesting to me and the rest of us non-WoW players, however, is Blizzard's revamp of the way trials for the game are handled. Gone are the trials restricted by time; instead, anyone with a Battle.net account can now play up to level 20 with the newly branded World of Warcraft Starter Edition.

What's more, the company has WoW and The Burning Crusade bundled together digitally for $19.99, and everyone who already owns the base game will get this first expansion at no additional cost. Between this and Team Fortress 2, productivity has to be going down the toilet lately.

Legacy Comments (will be imported soon)

Hrm, European site is still 10 day trial, lame.
Does not change the fact that you have to buy four games and a sub just to play it past that level.
I prefer the free to play level cap over the free to play pay to compete business model. Might actually check out WoW for the first time ever. I think I downloaded the trial a few times but never got around to trying it out. Mainly for fear of actually liking it. I could see myself letting my gym membership expire, my PS3 and 360 collecting dust, my kids wondering where dad is, ect. I am exaggerating a bit of course.
I think everyone who will be WoW die-hards... already are.

That said, it's kind of cool. I might try it out.
Aw, they wish they were Guild Wars 2.
@HaVoK308

You're not exaggerating. Don't do it. Everyone who starts WoW thinks they're strong enough to resist the addiction. You're not. No one is. It's a soul-sucking pit of despair. I'm not just saying this because I'm trying to sound smart or jump on the "wow players have no life" bandwagon. I played for a little over three years, and I'll never get those three years of my life back.

Just quit, finally, about a month ago. One month sober. Taking it a day at a time.
I called it.
I've tried a WoW trial period three seperate times.

Not once did I bother playing all 14 (or whatever) days. Lost interest several hours in.
@Tristrix

Whut you talking about, I quit cold turkey after my first lvl 60.....
Aw that's the expansion I already bought. I was thinking about playing WoW with my gf maybe... She has a very limited interest in video games, doesn't like to be challenge much during her relaxation time. It's tough to think of something beyond Kirby's Epic Yarn. This free to play cap saves me finding another copy to test her interest and I want to see the cataclysm changes.

I really enjoyed the time I spend in WoW back in the day but the sub fee pissed me off. Also it used all my spare time and I hate not clearing my back catalog of games.
I never really got into WOW. Tried the trial, but quit before it was too late. Could really see myself getting extra addicted, specially since it already happened with GW
Ehhh.....WoW isn't my thang. It gets very repetitive and ends up becoming a chore. Which,as you might have already guessed,isn't very fun.
I don't see what the big deal is about WoW. Tried it. The graphics were dated when it released and it has repetitive gameplay that you could get from any F2P MMO. BOOOOOORRRRIIIINNNG.
I might check it out, but I don't think I'll ever put as much time into an MMO has I have Maplestory. Simple game, addictive as hell, for me.
Hmm.. I wonder what sorts of effects this might have on the game's economy? Free to play and subscription based economies are very different. What will happen when worlds collide? HEAVEN OR HELL! DO OR DIE!

Okay, but really, I think this is a godsend for gold farmers.
Probably going to turn out the same as Valve & TF2,

Its going to be a series of stupid obvious changes over a year or so all leading to ZOMG WoW is FREE TO PLAY FOREVER!!!

Enjoy your slippery slope :P
Everyone who thinks they will get addicted to wow don't worry. My parents have wow an I play sometimes but it isn't addicting. I only play for 1 or 2 hours a week and sometimes don't play for months. But call of duty, that's addicting
I did the old trial twice way long ago, back when Burning Crusade was new. It...didn't really grip me. For the time period I had alloted, I played maybe...four hours total? It ran like ass on my laptop, and I still hate pay-to-play schemes, no matter how 'worthwhile' they are.

"Hmm, if I only play 40 hours this month, that'll be a cost of around $0.38 an hour...but if I bump it up to 80...MORE SAVINGS!"
WoW has changed a lot in this newest expansion. They basically gave their entire casual fan base a big FU and a middle finger. They brought back almost a million players when they released the expansion and have already lost them and a bit more due to how crappy the expansion is. If you want to know what is so crappy about it, they took away the casual's ability to raid successfully, they took away casuals abilities to complete a 4 piece tier set without completely beating a raid zone and wining a token, which is screwed up by the fact that raids were nearly unfinishable by casual players.

There are tons of other problems, but no point going nuts. Its a good game, but unless you want to devote a ton of time to it, I wouldn't bother. In the grand scheme of things, the only reason most people play nowadays is friends. Without those, the game has nothing to keep a person there unless they are in a high end raiding guild.
I'd prefer not to get divorced over a videogame, so no thanks.
I will give this a solid "meh." I played WoW for about one month. That did it for me.
WoW is ok, but too many of the players are elitist pricks. 85 is not a place for people who just want to play a game. If you're not a god at your class, expect to be ridiculed to no end. No one has the patience to tell you how to improve your skills or direct you to a place to help you.

For the record, I was decent at my class. I'm taking a long break because I got sick and tired of watching other players mercilessly rip into people who made forgivable mistakes. For the casual player or not, we're all still just people and deserve to be treated better. I'm sure other multi-player communities are just as bad, but this is the only one I've really experienced, so forgive me if I'm playing a tired tune :P

It's ok, though, if you've a lot of friends or manage to get into a guild who shares your style of playing the mmo.
Suddenly, Twinks! Twinks everywhere!
Would rather eat my own cock.
WoW is growing tired. I cant tolerate 40 min ques nor the A holes one is forced to play with. There's been more class re-balancing in and out of percentages than I care for. Been there and done that for too many years as it is.
Meh, maybe I can log in now just to chat with some old friends if theyre still playing. Havnt played since... 4.1, probably. Too bad too, the new WoW is a lot of fun but Im just burned out from it after 4 years.

Of course youre going to get that kind of attitude if you play with that kind of people... thats why you dont. Difficult concept, no? Ive never had an issue with getting groups or que times or completing HMs with normal, decent people.

Although I imagine if all you do is bitch and whine youre not likely to make many friends. Some people, like me, care more about your attitude than your gearscore.
Not sure what you are going on about, only people who get shore que times are tanks and healers. If you don't play them, then you are sol most of the time unless you play around 5 am est, in which case a dps will get around 12 to 15 min ques.
3 months clean from the addiction. Even the new raid content isn't producing a twinge to come back. I think I've finally quit for good and thank God for that.
I would play wow again if it was free to play... i've bought all expansions and leveled through them... done some pvp... a bit of arena... did raiding back in tbc and vanilla and am not interested in it anymore.

But if its free to play i'll log in every now and then... its just not worth me keeping a subscription up for imo.
It all ends so violently...
@Tristrix
I know that feel, bro.

I'm about 3 years clean. People actually play it sometimes and flat out call it the dumbest thing they've ever seen. This version is crippled, so I doubt that will improve matters. Someday it will die, son, just keep the faith.
It still costs $100 to get started on the current endgame content, with wrath/cata costing $40 each
I'm a former player (and was from launch til January of this year) and heres the deal on this:

The trial let you play to 20 (didn't ALWAYS let you, prior to a change towards that it was level 10), the only change being made here is that they took away the 10+ day time restriction to do so -which is an obvious grab at casual players (whom I'm positive they lost during Cataclysms release, the newest expanstion isn't casual friendly -Hell, in my case it wasn't even "hardcore, long time fan" friendly)

Additionally they're allowing you to start Draenai and Blood Elf characters in the trial now-which is something they never allowed trial players to do before, seeing as those 2 races require you to have The Burning Crusade expansion (which is now being included in the bundle mentioned)

@Tristrix

After playing for 6 years or so myself, when I quit it was like weight was lifted off of me.. A REALLY huge weight. I've honestly have never been happier. Sure, I went and started to play Rift, and I'm actually (and have been for a long time) waiting out The Old Republic, but I don't feel nearly as tied to Rift as I ever did playing WoW. I can go a week or 2 not playing Rift and I couldn't care less.
"Does not change the fact that you have to buy four games and a sub just to play it past that level."

You dont, actually. Vanilla+TBC for 20 bucks, thats level 70 cap. Even if you just got Vanilla, theres a shitload of content for you to do for a while especially now that its all be revamped/updated.

Hell some people live in the dungeon que, you could do nothing but run level 60 instances if you wanted to now.
lol, can you make a lvl 19 for pvp and turn off leveling?
This is just a infinite free trial. The same restrictions that the 14 day trial had are still in place. You still can't send mail etc...
jesus cristo this game sucked years from my life. Pretty much one of the best games ever made imo. Oh the references! The gameplay! The possibilities! My first and probably last mmo, no others will compare to it. Glad I stopped a couple years ago, right after the first expansion...it was more fun when there were people leveling up for the first time, now it is just an alt-fest
ha ha I am a level 12 Rogue and have been since I started playing. I don't want to pay for a subscription because I don't have time to play, so this will give me some incentive to play at least until level 20.
It's great that TBC is bundled with the original game, but why isn't Wrath, too? There's absolutely no point in paying for an expansion whose content you will never see beyond the quest zones so the only point it serves is to bar people from the latest content, which they also have to pay for. They lowered the total price from $90-100 to $80. Goody. That's still way more expensive than it should be.
